With a commitment to protecting sailors, families, and the freedom of the nation, General Dynamics Electric Boat continuously pushes the boundaries of technology, quality, and craftsmanship in submarine design and construction.
The position of Metrology Technician within the Accuracy Control Department at General Dynamics Electric Boat offers a challenging and rewarding career path. This is an hourly role based at the Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. The Metrology Technician is responsible for executing precise three-dimensional and standard optical tooling measurements essential for accurate ship and module alignments. These measurements contribute to critical shipbuilding activities such as developing cut lines, aligning and installing ship components, and pairing major modules. The role requires mastery in selecting and using the right tools for various engineering measurement tasks while maintaining high safety and accuracy standards. The technician works closely with Accuracy Control Representatives to validate measurement data and develops solutions in collaboration with engineering, ship management, and other trades.
Candidates should be prepared to operate advanced optical alignment and Total Station equipment similar to land surveying tools. Responsibilities include establishing ship reference lines and planes, verifying hull circularities during construction, recording critical ship dimensions, and aiding production with profiles and locations of major components. The technician may also assist shipfitters with complex structural layouts and support dimensional control requirements, contributing to quality assurance and continuous improvement programs.
Ideal applicants will have a background in surveying, machine shop dimensional inspection, robotics, or related fields, combined with strong math and computer skills. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential for interfacing with various teams and ensuring project success. This role demands physical capability to work at heights, within confined spaces, and under varying temperature conditions, along with a willingness to travel to vendor sites as needed. Candidates must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a Department of Defense security clearance.
General Dynamics Electric Boat offers an excellent benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage, prescription benefits, wellness programs, 401K, commuter/van services, paid vacation and holidays, paid training, shift differentials for evening and night shifts, and opportunities for career advancement.
