The Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 role at Rush University Medical Center is a full-time position within the RML Chemistry Department, working the 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM shift. This position plays a critical role in performing all assigned laboratory testing and ensuring accurate reporting within the assigned testing area. Medical Laboratory Scientists are responsible for accurately processing specimens, performing quality control procedures, troubleshooting laboratory equipment, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace. They must ensure that all laboratory work adheres to Rush's approved policies and procedures and comply with regulatory requirements such as CLIA. The position requires the use of personal protective equipment and collaboration with the team to meet turnaround time expectations, ensuring timely and reliable test results.

The role includes opportunities for professional development, including obtaining 12 hours of laboratory continuing education annually and participating in special projects, method evaluations, new procedure development, and training of new staff and students. Medical Laboratory Scientists may also take on responsibilities as the tech-in-charge during specified periods, overseeing operations and ensuring compliance with departmental guidelines.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science, biological science, chemistry, or education/work experience meeting qualifications of high complexity testing personnel as defined by CLIA 42 CFR 493 1489
  • Certification from nationally recognized certifying agencies such as ASCP, AMT, AACC or ACHI depending on laboratory section
  • Ability to utilize required personal protective equipment
  • Ability to perform quality control and preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments
  • Must adhere to Rush Code of Conduct and ICARE values
  • Willingness to obtain 12 hours of laboratory continuing education per year
  • Ability to work full-time night shift (11:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • No previous experience required
  • Able to troubleshoot and document equipment issues
  • Interacts effectively and respectfully with all individuals

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science, biological science, chemistry, or related field
  • Certification from a nationally recognized certifying agency such as ASCP or AMT
  • No previous experience required for Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 role
  • Ability to perform high complexity testing as defined by CLIA 42 CFR 493 1489
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Ability to follow policies, procedures, and maintain quality standards
  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact respectfully with colleagues and patients

Job Duties

  • Utilizes required personal protective equipment as defined by the lab area
  • Labels and processes specimens properly
  • Performs all laboratory procedures efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision once trained
  • Performs required quality control procedures and preventative maintenance including corrective action and documentation
  • Recognizes QC problems or discrepancies and notifies appropriate supervisor
  • Performs basic troubleshooting of equipment and processes with minimal assistance and notifies appropriate personnel
  • Keeps work area neat, clean, organized, and well-stocked
  • Accepts no inappropriate specimens and notifies appropriate person of specimens needing recollection
  • Meets turnaround time expectations by prioritizing and organizing workload
  • Utilizes time effectively and assists fellow workers to finish shift tasks
  • Documents continuing education and participates in special projects and new procedure development
  • May perform duties of tech-in-charge and oversees operations according to departmental guidelines
  • Reviews lab results, takes appropriate action before verification and release, and recognizes and calls critical results within defined time frames
