Banner Health's University Medical Center Phoenix is a nationally recognized academic medical center with a strong emphasis on coordinated clinical care, expanded research initiatives, and training the next generation of medical professionals. The Executive Chef & Manager role at Banner Health offers an exciting leadership opportunity within the Culinary & Nutrition Department, focused on hospital food services and catering. The position is a full-time, day-shift role with hours typically from 8 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend duties. As an Executive Chef & Manager, you will be responsible for menu and recipe design, overseeing food production, ensuring high-quality food presentation, managing catering services, and leading culinary staff. This role demands a strong culinary expertise combined with effective leadership and operational management skills.

Your responsibilities include developing upscale menus, maintaining quality control standards, and standardizing recipes to meet budget constraints while ensuring exceptional presentation and taste. You will lead and mentor the culinary team, provide training and professional development, and implement safety and sanitation practices compliant with regulatory standards. The role also involves engaging with patients, physicians, hospital staff, and visitors to deliver excellent food experiences and customer service.

Additionally, you will collaborate on planning new retail concepts within the department, conduct financial analysis related to food production and catering, and manage operational budgets. The Executive Chef & Manager position requires the ability to problem-solve, work independently, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. Proficiency with office software and electronic medical records systems is essential, as is maintaining relevant food safety certifications such as ServSafe or a certified food manager license.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Current ServSafe certificate or certified food manager license
  • Minimum three years of relevant culinary experience
  • Ability to organize, lead, and direct work teams
  • Strong communication and team-building skills
  • Effective problem-solving with staff, physicians, families, and patients
  • Proficiency in menu design for retail, catering, and gourmet dining
  • Continued training and education in current food and nutrition
  • Proficiency in office software including Excel
  • Ability to work with electronic medical record applications
  • Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card and Criminal History Affidavit for specific positions

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Current ServSafe certificate or certified food manager license
  • Minimum three years of experience in culinary roles such as sous chef, baker, kitchen manager, quantity cook, or large-scale catering
  • Proficiency in menu design, upscale catering, and gourmet meal production
  • Strong leadership, team-building, and communication skills
  • Ability to problem-solve and work independently
  • Continued education in food and nutrition
  • Proficiency in common office software including Excel
  • Experience working with electronic medical records
  • Ability to maintain Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card and complete Criminal History Affidavit

Job Duties

  • Provide professional culinary advice and expertise for all food production activities
  • Train, develop and coordinate culinary activities for all production staff
  • Plan and design new retail concepts and menus to maximize revenue
  • Establish quality control standards and approve final menu preparations
  • Manage hiring, training, competencies, evaluations, and discipline of culinary staff
  • Ensure sanitary practices, portion control, temperature, waste control, and HACCP compliance
  • Research and develop recipe specifications and instruct staff to meet budget requirements
  • Interact with customers, physicians, leadership, and staff to address needs and resolve concerns
  • Oversee staff supervision, operations, and financial control for efficient food service operations
