The Coney Island YMCA branch is currently seeking a Maintenance Worker/Porter to join its dedicated team. This role is integral to maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of the facility, ensuring that all members and visitors experience a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment. The Maintenance Worker/Porter will be responsible for a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks including mopping, dusting, trash removal, and sanitizing assigned areas on a daily basis. Additionally, this position involves other duties such as window washing, pool cleaning, snow removal, groundskeeping, and event setup, making it a dynamic and hands-on role.

Candidates for this position should have a minimum of six months of related experience and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. They must be knowledgeable about cleaning methods, equipment, and chemical use. The role requires physical stamina and the ability to perform tasks that may involve bending, reaching, lifting, and working in confined spaces or at heights. Safety is paramount, and the candidate must be able to operate both motorized and non-motorized equipment safely and efficiently. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum six months related experience
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment
  • Understanding of chemical compounds and safe use
  • Ability to obtain housekeeping certificate within one year
  • Physical ability to perform maintenance tasks including semi-reaching, crouching, kneeling, shoveling, carrying, working in narrow spaces, twisting, lying down
  • Ability to use ladders, scaffolding, motorized lifts up to 30 feet
  • Ability to work with paints, cleaning compounds, solvents, and cleaners
  • Ability to safely use hand tools and operate motorized equipment

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Ensure the Coney Island YMCA is attractive and clean by completing all duties listed on the daily schedule and maintaining the upkeep of assigned area and equipment
  • Perform wet and dust mopping, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, pool cleaning, painting, vacuuming, lawn care, snow removal, and general cleaning
  • Operate related motorized and non-motorized equipment
  • Record and report all needed repairs and make repairs as directed
  • Ensure the building and property are secure during the shift and report incidents or hazardous conditions to the supervisor
  • Replace soap, paper towels, and other supplies
  • Set up furniture and/or rooms for events
  • Strip and wax floors and shampoo rugs as needed
  • Follow standards of DOH, DOB, FDNY, HPD, and ECB departments
  • Follow YMCA housekeeping policies and procedures
