Job Description
The YMCA of Greater New York is a well-established and highly respected nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth, improving health, and strengthening communities throughout New York City. Founded in 1852, the YMCA has grown to serve a diverse population of more than half a million New Yorkers through its 24 branches across the city. The organization focuses on fostering a strong sense of community by connecting active and engaged individuals, providing opportunities for learning, growth, and thriving in a supportive environment. The YMCA’s enduring commitment to community health and wellness makes it a cornerstone institution in New York City.
The Prospect Park YMCA is currently seeking a dedicated Maintenance Worker / Porter to join their team. This position is essential in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall upkeep of the facility, ensuring a welcoming and hygienic environment for all members and visitors. The role offers an hourly wage of $17.17 and involves responsibilities such as cleaning and sanitizing assigned areas, including mopping, dusting, and trash removal. The Maintenance Worker / Porter will also be expected to handle other duties including window washing, room set-ups and break downs, pool cleaning, snow removal, grounds keeping, and minor repairs as necessary.
Working in this role means actively contributing to the smooth operation of the YMCA facility by adhering to all relevant health and safety standards set by regulatory bodies such as the Department of Health, Department of Buildings, and Fire Department of New York. The successful candidate will also follow the YMCA’s housekeeping policies and procedures and is required to obtain the YMCA Housekeeping certificate within one year of employment. The position involves using both motorized and non-motorized equipment, performing light maintenance work, and ensuring that all areas remain secure and well-stocked with supplies like soap and paper towels.
In addition to the hands-on duties, the Maintenance Worker / Porter plays a critical role in supporting the facility’s programming by setting up and breaking down rooms and installations as needed. The role requires someone who is reliable, detail-oriented, and committed to sanitary practices in alignment with CDC guidelines, contributing to the health and well-being of staff and patrons alike. The YMCA fosters a positive work environment where employees participate in training sessions, meetings, and special events to continue their professional growth and connection to the organization’s mission.
This position is ideal for someone with a high school diploma or equivalent, at least six months of experience in a similar role, and a good understanding of cleaning methods, equipment upkeep, and basic maintenance tasks involving electrical, plumbing, painting, and carpentry. Candidates with excellent hospitality skills and a conscientious approach to safety and cleanliness will find this opportunity rewarding. The YMCA of Greater New York offers a comprehensive benefits package to staff members, including retirement benefits, medical coverage, paid time off, and free YMCA membership, making it an attractive option for individuals passionate about community service and personal development.
