Job Description
NJ TRANSIT is the third-largest transportation agency in North America, dedicated to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transit services across New Jersey and connecting to neighboring states. As a government-owned public transportation corporation, NJ TRANSIT operates buses, light rail, and commuter trains serving over 500,000 passengers every day. The agency is committed to excellence, innovation, and safety in its operations, making it an essential pillar in the region's transportation infrastructure. With a workforce focused on delivering outstanding service and maintaining high standards for safety and reliability, NJ TRANSIT offers a dynamic and rewarding work environment for its employees. This environment supports career growth through comprehensive training and opportunities to advance within the organization.
The Locomotive Engineer role at NJ TRANSIT represents an exciting and challenging career opportunity within the rail transportation division. Locomotive Engineers are among the most highly trained and skilled members of the rail workforce, responsible for operating complex and powerful locomotives. This role entails a deep understanding of train operating rules, safety regulations, and mechanical systems. Engineers conduct pre-trip inspections, monitor track conditions, control train speed through throttle and brake applications, and respond effectively to emergency situations. Working closely with conductors and other rail crew members, Locomotive Engineers play a critical role in ensuring the safe and timely transport of thousands of passengers daily.
NJ TRANSIT's Locomotive Engineer Training Program (LETP) spans 20 months, combining classroom learning with on-the-job training to provide comprehensive knowledge of operating procedures, equipment functions, and safety requirements. Upon completion, engineers typically start by working an "extra list" with variable shifts before moving into regular assignments based on seniority. This job requires readiness to work irregular hours and maintain strict adherence to safety standards. The agency offers a competitive entry pay of $37.10 per hour, increasing to $53.00 per hour after promotion upon completion of the training program, with further increases as per collective bargaining agreements.
The position demands exceptional multitasking, communication, and problem-solving skills, alongside the physical capability to work in diverse conditions, including extreme weather. Locomotive Engineers must demonstrate strong self-management, accountability, and professionalism while operating equipment and managing the safety of passengers and staff. NJ TRANSIT fosters a supportive work culture backed by union representation and a comprehensive benefits package that enhances employee well-being and job satisfaction. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about transportation, mechanical systems, and team collaboration, looking to establish a long-term career with growth potential in one of the nation’s leading transit agencies.
