The role of Lead Cook within this establishment is a pivotal one with a blend of culinary expertise, leadership, and operational oversight. The Lead Cook is responsible for preparing meals according to approved menus and recipes, ensuring that all food served meets quality and safety standards while catering to the special dietary needs of the residents. More than just a skilled cook, the Lead Cook plays a critical supervisory role in assisting with training and overseeing dietary staff to ensure efficient kitchen operations, especially in the absence of the Dining Services Director and Dining Services Supervisor. They ensure that the kitchen environment remains clean, orderly, and compliant with safety and sanitation policies.
In this role, the Lead Cook is expected to be proactive in reporting equipment faults and ensuring food safety regarding temperature control and food storage. They also have the responsibility of managing food waste by monitoring portion sizes and making necessary menu substitutions only when approved. The Lead Cook frequently interacts with residents, requiring an understanding of individual dietary preferences and needs, demonstrating courteous and professional behavior at all times, and maintaining confidentiality concerning resident information.
Furthermore, the Lead Cook supports continuous improvement efforts by participating in regular cleaning schedules, attending mandatory in-service trainings, and conducting staff training sessions under the direction of the Dining Services Director. This role demands physical stamina, the ability to follow detailed instructions, and a readiness to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays. Job Requirements
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- must have experience as a cook preferably in senior living for fine dining
- must have leadership experience
- must be Serv-Safe certified or be willing to complete certification within 60 days of hire
- must have a basic understanding of food service operations including familiarity with other dietary position duties
- must possess the ability to read write and make simple calculations
- must be able to learn quickly and apply principles learned
- must be able to follow oral and written directions
- must be experienced in food preparation cooking and in estimating quantities of food required
- must be knowledgeable of principles and requirements of sanitation and safety in handling food and equipment
- must be able to stand for long periods and withstand temperature extremes wet and or humid conditions and noise
- must be able to lift 50 lbs on a regular basis or at least eight times per shift
- must be able to carry heavy objects for 20 feet
- must be able to pull push grasp and reach adequately to perform necessary cooking activities
- must be organized and work well with people as part of a team
- must be in designated uniform including slip resistant footwear during working hours and maintain good personal hygiene
- must be willing to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings weekends and holidays
