Job Description
California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) is a vibrant and innovative casual dining restaurant chain known for bringing California creativity to the culinary world. Established in 1985 by former federal prosecutors Rick Rosenfield and Larry Flax, CPK revolutionized the pizza industry by integrating fresh ingredients and inventive recipes inspired by California's diverse flavors. Their famous hearth-baked pizzas like The Original BBQ Chicken, California Club, and Thai Chicken have become iconic, positioning California alongside Chicago and New York in the pizza revolution. Beyond pizza, CPK offers an extensive menu crafted to inspire creativity, passion, and a lively dining experience.
At CPK, the company culture is deeply rooted in their ROCKS philosophy: Respect, Opportunity, Communication, Kindness, and Service. This philosophy drives their commitment to building a supportive and inclusive environment where employees can thrive personally and professionally. CPK values a bold, authentic workforce passionate about hospitality and culinary excellence. They invest heavily in employee growth, offering comprehensive training and unique learning platforms, making it a workplace where talent can flourish and careers can advance through internal promotions.
The role offered at CPK is a Back of House (BOH) Manager position—a critical leadership role within their vibrant restaurant settings. The BOH Manager is responsible for delivering outstanding guest experiences by overseeing kitchen operations, ensuring a smooth workflow during peak periods, and maintaining the highest standards of food quality and safety. This leadership role involves managing daily kitchen functions, coordinating food preparation, cooking, and plating to ensure timely, consistent, and delicious dishes. More than just kitchen oversight, the BOH Manager inspires and develops the team, nurturing careers with a people-first mentality aligned with CPK’s culture of kindness and opportunity.
In this position, the BOH Manager is also responsible for business aspects such as building sales, profitability, and guest counts while managing the restaurant's profit and loss (P&L) statements. This includes forecasting and managing labor costs, practicing portion controls, preparing budgets, and analyzing variances to meet financial targets. Strong communication skills are vital, as the manager must interact effectively with employees, guests, suppliers, and senior management. Proficiency in Spanish is considered an asset and can help in effective communication within diverse teams. Safety and cleanliness standards are also a key focus to maintain a healthy environment adhering to sanitation regulations.
CPK is committed to supporting its team members with a generous benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, disability insurance, and 401K plans. The company fosters an employee-centric environment by offering unique perks such as an eight-week comprehensive training program using multiple learning modes, endless pizza meals during work, and a Management Dine-Out card for team members to enjoy dining with loved ones. The company culture is described as tremendously passionate and one-of-a-kind, where employees can freely express their unique talents and skills. Additionally, the company offers an employee-driven assistance program called the Kindness Fund, designed to support employees facing life challenges. With competitive compensation and bonus potential, CPK provides an attractive and fulfilling employment opportunity for motivated hospitality professionals. The role of BOH Manager is designed for leaders passionate about execution, hospitality, service, and team building who want to contribute to a top-tier dining experience within a forward-thinking and inclusive company.
