Job Description

House of Hope (HOH) is a dedicated nonprofit organization that has been serving homeless families for over 35 years. HOH operates three emergency shelters providing comprehensive shelter and support services for parents and children. Through its Housing Resource Center and the innovative Learn2Work (L2W) initiative, HOH aims to empower its clients by offering skill development and job training programs. The Learn2Work initiative includes two notable internship programs: the Hope Chest, a Childrens Clothing Resale Shop and Job-Training Program, and the Culinary Kitchen Internship. HOH's sister organization, House of Hope Housing, Inc., plays a critical role by providing permanent, affordable housing and assistance to formerly homeless families. Their collective mission is to build economic self-sufficiency, promote neighborhood stability, and improve educational opportunities, particularly for children experiencing poverty. This shared commitment drives HOHs success in helping families transition out of homelessness.

The Kitchen Chef/Instructor is a key role within House of Hope's kitchen team, reporting directly to the Kitchen Manager at the main HOH Fletcher kitchen. This part-time position works Wednesdays through Saturdays, with scheduled hours from 9 AM to 5 PM on Wednesday through Friday, and 8 AM to 3 PM on Saturday. The role demands a strong focus on day-to-day food production and operational management of the kitchen, ensuring the provision of high-quality meals for the shelter residents. The Kitchen Chef/Instructor is also responsible for instructing and mentoring participants in the Learn2Work Culinary Kitchen Internship, focusing not only on culinary skills but also on important job-readiness competencies. This includes teaching nutrition, budgeting, food safety, and preparation techniques aligned with the program's curriculum.

In this role, the Kitchen Chef/Instructor ensures food is properly prepared, stored, inventoried, and safely transported across shelters, maintaining the highest standards for quality and sanitation in compliance with health regulations. Beyond food preparation, they serve as a positive role model for shelter resident interns, guiding them through practical, hands-on training for entering the food service industry. The ideal candidate demonstrates professionalism, strong leadership, and a mission-driven attitude, embodying HOH's values of respect and optimism towards both team members and the families it serves. This position requires physical stamina and an ability to work effectively in a diverse community environment. House of Hope values team responsiveness and a collaborative spirit as essential to achieving its mission. The Kitchen Chef/Instructor's stewardship in managing food resources and mentoring interns directly supports the organizations broader goals of fostering independence and self-sufficiency among the vulnerable populations it serves.
