Job Description

The Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is a pivotal program managed under the National Science Foundation (NSF) that facilitates U.S. research operations in one of the most challenging environments on Earth: Antarctica. The ASC provides critical support services, including facilities maintenance, logistics, transportation, and communications. This program is designed to ensure safe and efficient scientific research in the Antarctic region, supporting a broad spectrum of scientific endeavors from glaciology to biology.

ASC is currently hiring for a full-time, seasonal contract position for an Electrician to operate within this unique and demanding work environment. The role is integral to maintaining the electric infrastructure necessary to support the scientific missions and daily operations of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). The position pays approximately $2,190 per week, reflecting the specialized skills and harsh working conditions that come with the job.

The Electrician will perform tasks ranging from installing to maintaining and repairing electrical systems and equipment under the supervision of senior electricians or facilities supervisors. This encompasses working with branch circuits, power distribution wiring, lighting systems, and various electrical fixtures while adhering strictly to the National Electric Code standards. The work often involves troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair to ensure minimal downtime for critical infrastructure.

Beyond conventional electrician tasks, the role demands adaptability to extreme outdoor conditions characteristic of Antarctica, including severe cold and strong winds. The electrician must maintain a high standard of safety, utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment such as arc flash gear, electrical rated boots and gloves. The role requires timely response to emergency service calls even outside normal working hours, highlighting the necessity for reliability and readiness.

Successful candidates must be comfortable working with detailed schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documents to complete tasks effectively. Communication with other departments is essential for coordinated maintenance and operational efficiency. The electrician is also responsible for maintaining accurate documentation, including hours worked, materials used, and job hazard analyses, reinforcing the emphasis on safety and regulatory compliance.

In addition to technical competencies, the position expects candidates to be proactive custodians of their work environment, insisting on cleanliness, safety, and orderliness. This includes participating in community programs, recycling efforts, and safety objectives to foster a cohesive and responsible working community.

This role requires deployment to Antarctica for extended periods, necessitating completion of stringent medical, dental, drug screening, and federal background checks. Candidates must hold a valid U.S. driver's license and U.S. citizenship to obtain facility credentials at the work location. Physical demands include heavy lifting, climbing, and working outdoors in extreme cold environments.

In summary, this electrician position is a challenging and rewarding opportunity for skilled professionals looking to contribute to groundbreaking scientific research in one of the world’s most extreme environments. The role demands technical precision, physical resilience, and a strong commitment to safety and teamwork within a unique and vital government-supported scientific initiative.
