Job Description
Established in 1965, Marukai Corporation, operating under the brand name Tokyo Central, stands as a pioneer in bringing authentic Japanese products to the United States. As one of the first international Japan-based retailers in the US market, Marukai has grown steadily by focusing on quality, customer satisfaction, and an extensive selection of imported Japanese goods. Their offerings range from food and health products to cosmetics, home furnishings, electronic appliances, stationery, clothing, and pottery. After joining the Pan Pacific International Holdings Corporation, a prominent retail group headquartered in Japan, Marukai expanded its reach through Tokyo Central and Tokyo Central & Main branded stores, enhancing its product variety and elevating the shopping experience. The company's philosophy, "The Customer Matters Most," reflects its commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles and delivering the finest quality products from Japan to its valued customers.
The role offered is for a seafood department associate at Tokyo Central, focusing on seafood handling and customer service. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about fish, sashimi, and fresh seafood, with or without prior experience, as thorough training will be provided. The associates in this department are responsible for a comprehensive range of seafood-related tasks including cutting, packing, and preparing fish, as well as ensuring proper handling, stocking, rotation, and merchandising of seafood products. A critical aspect of this job is maintaining product freshness and quality by monitoring temperatures and adhering to safety standards.
The role also involves detailed food preparation such as preparing sashimi platters, cutting vegetables, and making poki. Associates are expected to use various equipment such as knives, scales, slicers, saws, pallet jacks, scissor lifts, balers, compactors, and scrub machines safely and efficiently. Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of the seafood department, including the back room and front displays, is a high priority to ensure a safe and hygienic work environment. The work environment may involve exposure to extreme temperatures and potential hazards related to seafood handling and equipment use.
Customer service is a significant part of this job, requiring associates to greet and assist customers, answer questions, and provide guidance on healthy food choices. They also engage in suggestive selling and support the overall store goals by meeting or exceeding department sales targets. The role demands effective communication with store management, associates, suppliers, and vendors to foster a positive team environment built on mutual respect and exceptional morale.
Tokyo Central seafood department associates must be adaptable and open to cross-training in other departments to support store operations and enhance their skill set. This position requires flexibility to work evening shifts, weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Marukai emphasizes safe working conditions through stringent adherence to COVID-19 precautions including sanitation, social distancing, and use of personal protective equipment, complying with health department regulations and federal laws.
In summary, this is a dynamic, hands-on position for individuals who enjoy working with seafood and delivering excellent customer service in a fast-paced retail environment. Tokyo Central offers a supportive atmosphere where employees receive training, develop specialized skills, and contribute to an established brand known for quality and customer care.
