Job Description

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a federal agency committed to providing comprehensive healthcare services, benefits, and support to veterans and their families. With a deep respect for those who have served in the military, the VA operates numerous healthcare facilities across the country dedicated to improving the lives of veterans. Among the essential roles within the VA healthcare system is that of a Housekeeping Aid, a vital position contributing to maintaining a sanitary and safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. This caregiving environment requires dedicated individuals who understand the importance of cleanliness and hygiene in healthcare settings, especially where vulnerable populations receive care.

The VA Boston Healthcare System, located in West Roxbury, MA, is currently accepting applications for multiple full-time Housekeeping Aid positions. This role is not only about cleaning but also about supporting the well-being of Veterans who rely on the facility. These positions offer an hourly wage ranging from $19.54 to $22.79, reflecting the significance of maintaining a clean and safe healthcare environment. The employment is permanent and requires a flexible approach to shifts and days off based on the facility's needs. Housekeeping Aids at the VA perform both light and heavy cleaning duties, which include cleaning wards, patient rooms, corridors, restrooms, and various other areas essential to facility operation. Duties also extend to sweeping, mopping, scrubbing floors using machines, vacuuming carpets and furniture, emptying waste baskets, and restocking necessary bathroom supplies. The work demands thoroughness, efficiency, and the ability to handle physically demanding tasks such as moving furniture and promptly addressing spills.

Employees in this role at the VA often work alongside fellow Veterans, creating a unique community atmosphere where 85 percent of the housekeeping staff are Veterans themselves. This dynamic fosters understanding, camaraderie, and a shared commitment to the mission of serving those who have served the nation. The position is critical in ensuring that healthcare environments remain clean, safe, and conducive to recovery and well-being. Employees are expected to carry out their assignments with minimal supervision while adhering to safety standards and organizational policies.

The VA emphasizes the importance of fitness for federal employment, background investigations, and drug screening for applicants selected for employment. The agency underscores that these roles require physical effort, including continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Housekeeping Aids may occasionally operate heavy powered cleaning equipment and work in environments that expose them to contagious diseases and hazardous materials, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment.

This opportunity is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the United States. Applicants must meet strict requirements, including citizenship, suitability for federal employment, and compliance with selective service registration for males. The VA also offers a comprehensive benefits package that supports employees and their families, making a career here not only impactful but rewarding as well. As a federal employee, you will gain access to health insurance, retirement plans, paid vacation, and more.

The role also includes a 1-year probationary period during which employees' performance and conduct will be evaluated. The VA values commitment to public service and offers a stable work environment dedicated to supporting Veterans' health and well-being. This announcement serves as a standing register of eligible applicants, with continuous recruitment until the positions are filled, allowing for ongoing opportunities to join the VA team in this vital capacity.
