The position of a Custodial and Maintenance Worker at the University of Massachusetts is a vital role responsible for performing a broad range of janitorial, custodial, housekeeping, maintenance, and groundskeeping tasks necessary for the routine upkeep and smooth operation of the university’s buildings and grounds. This role is essential in providing a clean, safe, and pleasant campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The employee in this position will be engaged in various physical tasks such as cleaning offices, classrooms, corridors, walls, floors, windows, and furniture by using professional cleaning methods like washing, waxing, buffing, scrubbing, sweeping, polishing, dusting, and vacuuming. They also assist in setting up and dismantling wall partitions and moving furniture and equipment to accommodate campus needs.

Furthermore, the Custodial and Maintenance Worker is expected to perform minor repairs using small hand and power tools, operate motor vehicles including light trucks and motorized cleaning equipment when required, and engage in winter maintenance like snow removal, sanding, and ice control. The role also includes essential groundskeeping duties such as sweeping sidewalks, raking leaves, collecting debris, and ensuring the general cleanliness of outdoor areas. Responsibility for waste management is included, such as emptying waste bins and properly disposing of rubbish. Security tasks such as locking and unlocking premises and reporting unusual or hazardous conditions play a critical part in this job.

This position is part of the MTA - Maintenance and Trades Bargaining Union, Grade 10, Step 1, with a starting bi-weekly salary of $1,728.74. The working shifts vary and include second shift (Monday to Friday, 1:30 pm to 10 pm) and first shift options (Sunday to Thursday or Tuesday to Saturday, 5 am to 1:30 pm). Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of types and uses of small hand tools used in building maintenance such as pliers, hammers, wrenches
  • Knowledge of standard procedures followed in storage of building custodial and cleaning materials
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used for security of buildings and property
  • Knowledge of methods followed in building custodial and maintenance work
  • Knowledge of types and uses of materials, tools and equipment used in building maintenance work
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in building maintenance and custodial work
  • Skill in use of small hand tools used in building maintenance such as pliers, hammers, wrenches
  • At least six months of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in manual labor related to general construction or maintenance work
  • Ability to pass Massachusetts CORI check
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License
  • Ability and willingness to be designated essential personnel

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Experience in janitorial, custodial, or maintenance work preferred
  • Basic knowledge of custodial and maintenance methods and techniques
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles if required
  • Ability to perform manual labor and physical tasks associated with building upkeep

  • Ability to work scheduled shifts including weekends and evenings

Job Duties

  • Clean campus property such as offices, classrooms, corridors, walls, floors, windows, furniture, woodwork, toilets, lavatories or fixtures by washing, waxing, buffing, scrubbing, sweeping, polishing, dusting, or vacuum cleaning
  • Assist in erecting and dismantling wall partitions
  • Move furniture and equipment
  • Empty and clean waste barrels, collect and remove rubbish garbage cans and other waste receptacles
  • Perform pressure washing, sweeping, collecting and removing rubbish
  • Open clogged catch basins, sewer lines, and unclog drains or toilets as needed
  • Make general repairs of a simple nature including minor repairs to equipment using small hand and hand-held power tools
  • Operate motor vehicles including light vehicles and trucks, snow and ice control equipment, and motorized cleaning equipment as assigned
  • Sweep sidewalks, rake and collect leaves, collect and haul debris or rubbish, shovel snow, sand roadways or walkways, and perform other manual tasks involved with snow removal, control and disposal
  • Load and unload trucks
  • Unpack and store supplies and equipment in stockrooms, storerooms or warehouses
  • Take periodic inventories of supplies and equipment
  • Lock or unlock premises
  • Report hazardous and unusual situations to the appropriate authority
  • Ensure the general cleanliness of the facility grounds
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
