The Patient Meal Service Associate role at Princeton Community Hospital is essential in ensuring that patients receive timely, accurate, and hospitable meal service during their hospital stay. This full-time position, scheduled for 40 hours weekly, operates within a dynamic food service environment where attention to detail and patient interaction are paramount. The primary responsibilities of this role involve assisting patients in selecting meals according to dietary orders, assembling and delivering meal trays, and maintaining hygiene and cleanliness standards throughout the service process.
In this role, associates are expected to interact courteously and professionally with patients, ensuring their specific dietary needs are met according to prescribed diets and preferences. The associate will use hospital meal ordering systems to take patient selections either in person or by phone, ensuring all orders align with dietary restrictions and hospital policies. They also handle tray assembly duties, verifying the completeness of each meal tray and addressing any discrepancies promptly. This position requires maintaining infection control standards, hand hygiene, and following patient interaction protocols such as two patient identifiers and the AIDET communication model. Physical stamina is necessary, as the role involves standing for extended periods and pushing loaded meal carts.
Beyond meal service, the associate assists in educating new patients about the room service system and collaborates closely with kitchen and tray line staff to communicate special patient requests or dietary adjustments. They also document calorie counts when necessary and participate in maintaining a clean and organized work environment.

Job Requirements
- Current Food Handlers card or obtain within 30 days of hire
- Completion of Person in Charge (PIC) training as provided by County Health Department
- Ability to push fully loaded tray cart (approx. 250 lbs)
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to enter patient rooms including isolation precautions with protective equipment
- Willingness to work in noisy kitchen environment
- Must adhere to established food service and safety procedures
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Ability to understand written and oral communication
- Basic computer skills including use of keyboard, mouse, and Microsoft Word
- Telephone skills with proper etiquette and use of speaker phones and headsets
- Ability to follow infection control and patient safety protocols
- Good interpersonal skills for patient interaction
Job Duties
- Answer patient phone calls in a courteous manner
- Use current systems to obtain patient information and process meal orders
- Communicate with patients to obtain meal selections
- Compare patient menu selections with diet orders and make adjustments
- Assemble patient tray with selected menu items and deliver meals timely
- Retrieve meal trays and check for missing items
- Maintain supply of condiments on cart
- Follow missed meal report procedures and alert nursing
- Follow delivery standards including hand sanitization and infection control
- Document ordered calorie counts
- Educate new patients about room service
- Communicate special requests to tray line and kitchen personnel
- Maintain cleanliness in work and patient areas
- Assist with room service assembly or other food service areas as needed
