The Health and Safety Specialist role at EnergySolutions is designed to ensure that workplace activities are evaluated for potential hazards, and comprehensive programs are implemented to mitigate risks. This position involves analyzing operations to identify, control, and eliminate hazardous conditions affecting employees, property, the environment, and the general public. The specialist is responsible for delivering training aligned with company policies and regulatory standards, ensuring that both employees and managers adhere to health and safety practices. A key focus of the role is to uphold compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, maintaining meticulous records according to established guidelines.
Additionally, the Health and Safety Specialist draws on expertise in various health and safety domains such as air quality, asbestos, hazardous materials, and ergonomics. The role requires conducting detailed surveys and assessments, interpreting regulatory requirements and developing innovative approaches to hazard prediction. The specialist reviews safety data, accident probabilities, and potential exposure consequences, thereby supporting the company’s commitment to reducing workplace incidents and improving safety metrics such as the experience modification rate (EMR), total recordable cases (TRC), and days away restricted or transferred (DART).
The specialist actively contributes to the creation and refinement of safety trainings and procedures, supporting projects and management teams in implementing safe work environments. The position entails developing and reviewing health and safety plans, conducting job hazard analyses, and participating in safety inspections and briefings. While the role does not involve supervisory responsibilities, it demands accountability for individual work quality and adherence to both internal and external customer expectations. Job Requirements
- Associate's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety, biology, chemistry, environmental science or related health and safety field
- minimum 3 years of experience as a health and safety specialist
- effective verbal and written communication skills
- general knowledge of biology, chemistry, and physical/natural sciences
- working knowledge of local, state and federal health and safety regulations
- ability to understand and apply health and safety regulations
- intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office products
- ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, walking, climbing, and handling objects
- ability to work in various environmental conditions including exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and chemicals
- ability to work independently and with others
- ability to work well under pressure
- basic reading, writing and comprehension skills
Job Qualifications
- Associate's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety, biology, chemistry, environmental science or related health and safety field
- preferred bachelor’s degree in the same areas
- preferred CIH or CSP certification
- minimum 3 years of experience as a health and safety specialist
- strong verbal and written communication skills
- general knowledge of biology, chemistry, and physical/natural sciences
- working knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations
- proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
- expertise in interpreting and applying health and safety standards
Job Duties
- Understand and analyze workplace activities and potential hazards
- implement training for employees and managers on health and safety policies
- ensure compliance with local, state, and federal health and safety regulations
- prepare and maintain necessary health and safety records
- promote compliance with experience modification rate (EMR), total recordable case (TRC), and days away restricted or transferred (DART) goals
- conduct surveys and assessments to ensure regulatory compliance
- interpret regulations and determine appropriate compliance methods
- serve as a subject matter expert in specific health and safety areas
- develop hazard prediction methods from data and workplace analysis
- identify hazards related to systems, equipment, products, facilities, and processes
- review causes and effects of hazards and evaluate accident probabilities
- coordinate and conduct health and safety training sessions
- assist in developing and revising training materials
- provide health and safety support to projects and management
- prepare and review safety programs, job hazard analyses, and protective equipment assessments
- develop and approve hazard analyses
- participate in safety briefings and inspections
- oversee work teams to address safety concerns
- work independently to resolve safety-related issues
- perform other duties as assigned
