This particular role of Regional Safety Engineer at AWS entails owning the health and safety function in a designated geographic area of the world-class AWS data center infrastructure. The Regional Safety Engineer will be pivotal in enhancing health and safety standards, cultivating and advancing AWS's already strong safety culture, and providing protection to employees and contractors in high-risk environments. Day-to-day responsibilities include collaborating extensively with data center engineers who operate electrical switching equipment, large-scale air handling mechanical systems, and critical IT gear. The role also involves close partnership with domain experts from security, construction, operations, logistics, compliance, corporate counsel, and human resources to implement a comprehensive global health and safety program.

As AWS continues to expand its global data capacity, the engineer will coordinate with construction managers to identify and mitigate risks before facilities become operational. The position requires agility to work in a fast-paced and rapidly evolving environment where new infrastructure, tools, products, and processes emerge frequently. By advocating for safe operational changes, this role helps maintain AWS's commitment to exceeding regulatory health and safety requirements.

The responsibilities include implementation of health and safety standards, policies, and practices such as safety management systems, employee training, risk assessments, and industrial hygiene assessments. Conducting rigorous health and safety audits of data centers and construction sites ensures ongoing compliance with safety and life safety requirements. Developing emergency response plans and business continuity strategies tailored to the unique challenges of the AWS environment is essential. The role also consists of maintaining meticulous safety record-keeping and performing data trend analysis to support leadership decision-making and business safety initiatives. Partnering with the AWS compliance team for regulatory guidance, identifying risks, and collaborating with operations teams for remediation rounds out the key duties. Frequent interaction with customers delivering health and safety consultation is also a vital aspect of the position.
