HSD works tirelessly to build resiliency within the community by offering crucial assistance in areas such as early childhood education, housing, career development, senior and adult disability independent living services, and emergency support including crisis rental and utility aid. With a strong emphasis on fostering social and economic mobility, HSD employs a collaborative approach that promotes dignity and respect while effectively meeting the needs of low-income and at-risk populations across Maricopa County. In 2025, the Department was honored with 23 Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties, a testament to its innovative programs addressing homelessness, reemployment pathways, early education partnerships, and community enhancement initiatives. Joining Maricopa County Human Services means becoming part of a vibrant team focused on meaningful community impact and personal professional growth.
The position of Head Start Floater Teacher plays a vital role within the Early Education Division, which aims to ensure children gain essential knowledge and skills to thrive both in school and life. As a Floater Teacher, you will provide critical support to preschool classrooms by promoting active and individualized learning experiences that are developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive. You will create a safe, nurturing, and interactive environment for children and their families while implementing cognitive-developmental strategies that enhance language and literacy development. This role entails flexibility and adaptability as you float between classrooms as needed, ensuring that each child receives focused attention and quality education. Furthermore, you will be actively involved in fostering parent education, engagement, and family support activities, helping build a strong partnership between families and the educational process.
This is a contractor position with benefits and a competitive annual salary range of $40,000 to $59,800, reflecting the candidate’s experience and internal equity. The role carries the responsibility of ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and Head Start regulations, maintaining a low teacher-to-student ratio of 1:10 to maximize effective learning. Maricopa County supports its educators by providing necessary classroom supplies, paid continuing education opportunities, tuition reimbursement, and certification programs such as the Child Development Association (CDA) credential, which can be earned on the job. Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance and ongoing renewal fees are covered by the County, along with exceptional health and wellness benefits including pet insurance and wellness incentive paybacks.
The position operates in a dynamic work setting that includes classroom, playground, and office environments, with schedules that may follow full-year or partial-year calendars aligned to Birth to Five site operations. Physical requirements include the ability to stand, sit on the floor, and lift up to 40 pounds, reflecting the hands-on nature of early childhood education. Maricopa County values bilingual skills in English and Spanish as well as candidates with personal experience as Head Start parents. Joining the Early Education team offers you the chance to make a meaningful difference in children’s lives while advancing your career within a supportive and mission-driven environment. Spread the spark that ignites young learners’ paths to lifelong success by becoming a Head Start Floater Teacher with Maricopa County Human Services Department.
