Renowned for its commitment to fostering career readiness, BTC offers a wide range of programs tailored to meet the demands of the modern job market. The college prides itself on maintaining a supportive and inclusive learning environment, ensuring students and staff feel safe, comfortable, and empowered on campus. With a vibrant community and dedicated faculty and staff, BTC continuously strives to enhance the educational experience for everyone on its campus.
The role of Graveyard Custodian is a vital part of the BTC Facilities team, tasked with maintaining cleanliness and safety throughout the campus during overnight hours. This position operates typically from 10 pm to 6 am, Monday through Friday, offering an essential service that helps prepare the campus for daily activities. Custodians will perform routine cleaning, sanitizing, and maintenance duties to ensure restrooms, classrooms, offices, and public spaces meet high standards of hygiene and functionality. Responsibilities extend to securing buildings by locking doors, setting alarms, and monitoring for unauthorized access, helping protect college property and personnel.
Ideal candidates for this position are reliable individuals with great attention to detail who can work independently and take pride in creating a safe, welcoming environment for students, faculty, and visitors. The role demands physical stamina, as custodians may be required to lift up to 50 pounds, stand or walk for prolonged periods, and use various custodial tools and equipment including mops, vacuum cleaners, auto-scrubbers, and power washers. The position emphasizes following instructions regarding chemical use, safety policies, and equipment handling to maintain a safe workspace.
As a bargaining unit position represented by the General Teamsters Local Union No. 231, this role offers a guaranteed monthly salary of $3,962 or an hourly wage of $22.77. Benefits include sick leave, vacation leave, personal leave, paid state and college holidays as well as access to Washington State's comprehensive insurance package encompassing multiple medical, dental, and vision options. In addition, employees are covered by life insurance, long-term disability insurance, and a robust retirement benefits package with options under the Public Employees Retirement System alongside voluntary investment programs.
Beyond cleaning duties, the Graveyard Custodian also contributes actively to the college’s emergency and safety responses, ensuring that all facilities remain secure and functional overnight. The position requires excellent communication skills to interact respectfully with staff, students, and visitors, as well as the ability to manage time effectively to meet deadlines. Candidates will be expected to travel between campus locations to perform various tasks and must complete a successful background check in accordance with Washington State law.
This employment opportunity represents an excellent chance to join a respected educational institution where your contributions directly support the academic mission and safety of the campus community. Applicants interested in this position should submit their materials by the priority deadline to be duly considered. Bellingham Technical College values diversity and equity, promoting an inclusive work environment where teamwork and mutual respect are paramount.
