Job Description
Petco is a leading specialty pet retailer dedicated to helping pets live their best lives while supporting pet owners nationwide. With over 60 years of experience, Petco has grown to become a trusted partner for pet parents, offering everything from nutritious meals and fun toys to essential supplies and expert care. Petco operates more than 1,500 stores across the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico, along with over 250 Vetco Total Care hospitals and numerous preventive care clinics. Through its commitment to animal welfare and community support, Petco has facilitated the adoption of approximately 7 million animals via in-store events and collaborates with thousands of local animal welfare organizations through its foundation, Petco Love.
The role of General Manager at Petco is pivotal in bringing the company’s mission and core values to life by leading a high-performing Pet Care Center that prioritizes the well-being of pets, inspires and develops team members, delights customers, and drives strong business results. As a leader, you are the owner of your business, responsible for people, performance, and process, and serve as a role model demonstrating what great leadership looks like. This position requires a genuine passion for pets and people, with a focus on building engaged teams, driving profitable growth, and maintaining rigorous standards for animal care, safety, and customer experience.
The General Manager fosters an environment where pets and their parents feel welcomed, supported, and cared for, championing animal health, safety, and humane treatment. You will lead an inclusive, energized team that embodies the Petco brand and delivers exceptional service by attracting, hiring, training, coaching, and developing diverse talent. Creating a positive, collaborative workplace culture is vital, where all partners feel involved, empowered, and motivated to succeed and grow professionally. As a leader, you will engage in coaching, celebrate successes, and make daily work meaningful and enjoyable.
From a business perspective, the General Manager owns operations including driving sales growth, profitability, and operational excellence. You will analyze financial and operational results, identify opportunities for improvement, and make decisive actions that optimize productivity and outcomes. Managing labor, payroll, expenses, merchandising, inventory, and operational processes according to Petco's standards ensures a safe, enjoyable environment for pets and customers alike. This role also involves representing Petco within the community by leading local events, adoption initiatives, and partnerships that enhance the company’s positive impact.
Success in this role is demonstrated by maintaining a safe, healthy environment where pets thrive, leading a high-performing engaged team with strong retention and career development, cultivating loyal customers who trust and return to your Pet Care Center, and running a profitable, well-managed operation that clearly reflects Petco’s values in action. This full-time position requires flexibility to support store hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and involves regular physical activity including standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds safely. Occasional travel may be required for training, meetings, or community engagement. Petco provides reasonable accommodations to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
Working at Petco offers purpose-driven employment making a tangible difference in animals’ lives, with growth opportunities through development programs and career pathways. The company values authenticity, inclusion, and teamwork, giving you the chance to lead and shape your business every day while doing what’s right for pets and people.
