As a General Manager at Petco, you become an essential part of this mission by leading a high-performing Pet Care Center that prioritizes pets' needs, inspires employees (partners), delights customers, and ensures strong business results. This full-time position commands ownership of the business, encompassing people management, operational excellence, and financial performance. The General Manager role serves as a role model for leadership, demonstrating integrity, transparency, and a steadfast dedication to animal care standards and customer satisfaction.

In this role, you will lead by fostering a welcoming environment where pets and pet parents feel supported, while building and coaching an inclusive, energetic team that embodies Petco’s passion for pets. You will be accountable for driving sales growth, managing profitability, and ensuring operational excellence through effective labor management, inventory control, and merchandising execution. Additionally, you will represent Petco in the community, participating in local events, adoption initiatives, and partnerships that reinforce the company’s impact on animal welfare.

The General Manager is also responsible for developing a strong leadership bench and succession planning, managing partner performance, and promoting continuous learning and career growth within the team. Operational responsibilities include adhering to safety and security protocols, maintaining store cleanliness and appearance, and protecting pets, partners, and merchandise through loss prevention measures. Success in this role means creating a safe and healthy environment for pets to thrive, fostering an engaged and high-performing team, earning customer loyalty, and running a profitable Pet Care Center that embodies Petco's values in practice.

The position is primarily performed within a Pet Care Center retail environment, requiring regular presence on the sales floor to engage with partners, customers, and pets directly. The role involves physical activities such as standing, walking, bending, and lifting items up to 50 pounds, as well as flexible availability to support operating hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Travel may be required occasionally for training, meetings, or community engagement. Job Requirements

  • 3+ years of management experience (retail leadership preferred)
  • Strong people leadership, coaching, and talent development skills
  • Solid business, financial, and operational acumen
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational abilities
  • A genuine passion for pets and customer service
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Completion of Petco leadership development programs may be required for internal candidates
