Operating in numerous locations, Harris Teeter provides a wide range of fresh food products, groceries, and services aimed at delivering unparalleled shopping experiences. With its rich history of quality customer service, the company emphasizes employee development and fosters a team-oriented work culture that strives to support both associates and customers alike. Harris Teeter's brand is synonymous with freshness, reliability, and community connection, making it a preferred choice for shoppers seeking premium products and excellent service.
The Fresh Foods Department Supervisor role at Harris Teeter offers an exciting leadership opportunity within this esteemed supermarket chain. This position is responsible for assisting the Department Manager in the overall direction, coordination, and performance evaluation of the Fresh Foods Department, which includes managing up to 80 associates. The supervisor’s duties encompass a blend of hands-on tasks like baking, frying, cake decorating, clerking, and chef responsibilities, alongside significant supervisory roles such as interviewing, training, planning, assigning, directing work, managing performance, rewarding, disciplining, and resolving workplace and customer-related issues.
The ideal candidate for this role should embody a commitment to exceptional customer service and demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills. This helps foster a positive environment that promotes teamwork and increases customer satisfaction and sales. Supervisory skills are particularly critical, including the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively under pressure and to show patience and understanding when interacting with both associates and customers. Harris Teeter also emphasizes the importance of community involvement, encouraging supervisors to advance the store’s standing through local activities and engagement.
This position requires a high school diploma or GED, paired with one to three years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The role demands proficiency in various computer software applications, including Harris Teeter Internet software, email, inventory management, spreadsheet software, and word processing tools. Strong numerical skills are also necessary to efficiently handle money, measurements, and calculations integral to daily operations.
Physical demands of the job include standing, walking, using hands and arms, lifting weights up to 60 pounds occasionally, and the capability to perform tasks requiring vision acuity, such as color and depth perception. The work environment typically involves exposure to wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, occasional exposure to airborne particles, chemicals, and temperature extremes. Despite these challenges, the company offers a supportive work culture that accommodates individuals with disabilities.
Harris Teeter provides comprehensive training that includes new hire orientation, customer service, safety, food safety, and department manager-specific training. Employees also gain access to group benefit plans upon completion of waiting periods, reinforcing the company’s commitment to employee welfare and satisfaction. This role is ideal for self-motivated individuals passionate about food service, team leadership, and community engagement looking to grow within a reputable supermarket chain.
