Job Description

We are currently seeking a dedicated Sous Chef to join our culinary team. This full-time role is integral to our kitchen operations, focusing on maintaining culinary standards, training staff, and assisting with menu development. The Sous Chef will be responsible for overseeing food purchasing, preparation, and quality control to ensure that all dishes meet the restaurant’s recipes and serving standards. Beyond the kitchen, the Sous Chef plays an important role in employee management, including interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating kitchen staff to uphold our high standards of food quality and sanitation.

In this role, creativity and passion for food are essential, as the Sous Chef will contribute to frequently changing menus and innovative food presentation. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, managing labor schedules, controlling food costs, and ensuring that all equipment and kitchen areas meet cleanliness and safety requirements. Additionally, effective communication with the management team and other employees is necessary to maintain a smooth and efficient operation. The Sous Chef will also implement the restaurant’s employee performance appraisal process and corrective actions when needed.

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent educational background, coupled with either a culinary degree or at least three years of experience in a Sous Chef role. Candidates must have a minimum of three years of kitchen experience in varied positions, including food preparation, line cook roles, and expediter duties, with at least six months in a comparable leadership capacity. Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with managers, kitchen staff, dining room personnel, and guests are essential.

Job Requirements

Job Duties

  • Assist in all kitchen functions including food purchasing, preparation and maintenance of quality standards
  • Ensure sanitation and cleanliness of kitchen areas
  • Train employees in cooking methods, preparation, plate presentation, portion and cost control
  • Demonstrate creativity in menu planning and execution
  • Ensure consistency in food preparation and serving according to recipes and standards
  • Make employment decisions including interviewing, hiring and disciplining kitchen staff
  • Provide orientation and training for new employees
  • Fill in where needed to maintain guest service standards
  • Prepare paperwork including forms, reports and schedules
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and condition
  • Collaborate with managers to plan and price menu items
  • Control food cost and waste
  • Schedule labor to meet business needs and cost objectives
  • Enforce company policies and administer corrective actions
  • Train kitchen staff in equipment safety, cleanliness and sanitation practices
  • Maintain cleaning schedules and proper food storage
  • Monitor food holding and refrigeration temperatures
