Job Description

The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state's leading social services agency committed to protecting vulnerable populations and strengthening families across Florida. DCF delivers a wide range of critical programs including child safety, foster care, adoption services, domestic violence prevention, adult protective services, support for refugees and homeless populations, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, childcare provider oversight, combating human trafficking, and public assistance programs. The agency is dedicated to partnering with local communities to ensure personal and family recovery and resilience while fostering economic self-sufficiency.

Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program holds responsibility as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. SAMH oversees the planning, evaluation, and implementation of an integrated statewide system of care aiming at prevention, treatment, and recovery for children and adults experiencing serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

The North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC), a component under SAMH, operates as a 216-bed, all-male forensic mental health rehabilitation facility located in northeastern Gainesville, Florida. Situated on 639 acres with abundant wildlife, NFETC provides comprehensive care and employs a diverse range of staff from food service to medical doctors and security professionals.

The Food Support Worker role at NFETC is a pivotal position within the Food Support unit, requiring both expertise in food preparation and a high level of operational leadership. This Career Service position offers a competitive annual salary range of $34,760 to $36,983.44. The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment, demonstrating strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to operate effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.

In this role, the Food Support Worker will ensure the consistent delivery of high-quality meals to residents and staff, while upholding rigorous sanitation and safety standards. The position involves supervising shift operations in the absence of the Food Services Administrator, coordinating support aides, and managing the stocking and utilization of leftovers to minimize waste. Serving as a key frontline contributor, the Food Support Worker will perform skilled cooking tasks including preparing meats, vegetables, soups, and gravies according to standardized recipes for multiple meal periods.

The successful candidate will be adept at managing multiple priorities with agility and professionalism, collaborating effectively across departments, and embodying the core values of DCF and SAMH. With a focus on proactive responsibility and reliable execution, this position offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to contribute meaningfully to Florida’s mental health rehabilitation efforts and support services.
