We are currently seeking both full-time and part-time Food Service Worker/Cashiers to join our team at South Windsor Public Schools located at 1737 Main Street, Hartford, CT. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about food service and customer interaction within a vibrant school environment. The positions involve engaging with students and staff, preparing and serving food, handling cash transactions, and upholding cleanliness and food safety standards. Flexibility is offered in the work schedule, with shifts available Monday through Friday and hours varying depending on school needs. Employees will receive a competitive fixed pay rate of $16.94 per hour along with eligibility for an internal employee referral bonus. The Food Service Worker/Cashier role is pivotal in delivering a positive dining experience to students by ensuring operations run efficiently and hygienically. Responsibilities include food preparation such as washing, peeling, and cutting fruits and vegetables, weighing and measuring ingredients, and distributing supplies and equipment needed in the kitchen. Workers are expected to comply with safety standards in moving food items, handle cash accurately, and perform other essential cashiering functions including sales recording and customer interaction. Maintaining sanitation in all food preparation and dining areas is critical, alongside following approved food recipes to maintain quality, portion control, and safe serving temperatures. This position also requires excellent communication skills to address customer concerns and support a friendly, service-oriented environment. The role offers a supportive atmosphere where ongoing training and operational guidance are provided by supervisors, ensuring associates excel in their duties while contributing to the mission of better nutrition and satisfaction in school dining services.

Job Duties

  • Perform prep work such as washing, peeling, cutting, and seeding fruits and vegetables
  • Weigh and measure designated ingredients
  • Carry pans, kettles, and trays of food safely between work stations
  • Distribute supplies, utensils, and portable equipment
  • Store foods following wrapping, dating, safety, and rotation procedures
  • Clean work areas, equipment, and utensils
  • Ensure compliance with sanitation and safety requirements
  • Use approved food recipes and production standards for quality and portion control
  • Serve customers in a friendly and efficient manner
  • Resolve customer complaints in a service-oriented manner
  • Relay relevant information to supervisors
  • Perform sales transactions and operate the cash register
  • Make change and handle declining balance cards and other payment forms
  • Issue receipts and follow protocols for cash refunds
  • Manage assigned change funds and cash receipts accurately
  • Replenish condiments, beverages, and supplies while maintaining cleanliness
  • Perform other duties as assigned
