The Food Service Worker position at Duke University plays a vital role in supporting this vibrant academic community by ensuring high-quality food preparation and customer service within the campus dining facilities. This role involves performing routine food service tasks under general supervision, including preparing portioned and fast foods using various cooking equipment such as grills, broilers, and deep fat fryers. The incumbent is responsible for operating point-of-sale cash registers, calculating and processing payments through cash, meal cards, or charge cards. Additional duties encompass cleaning and maintaining equipment and dining areas, assisting with food production activities including preparing meats, vegetables, baked goods, and desserts, as well as ensuring proper food storage and sanitation standards. This position requires someone who can work effectively in a busy environment, has strong attention to detail for food safety, and can provide excellent customer service.
Work hours are designed to accommodate university scheduling needs, typically covering weekend shifts and evenings, with a total of 30 hours per week. Job Duties
- assist in the preparation of foods such as meats, vegetables, baked goods and desserts
- prepare food to include beverages, salads, dressings, sandwiches and cold plates
- prepare portioned and fast foods on grill, in broiler, or in deep fat fryer as appropriate
- operate point-of-sale cash register
- calculate total cost of items and accept payment in cash, on meal cards, or on charge cards
- perform clerical duties in food services offices
- provide customer service as needed
- operate food production equipment including slicers, choppers, dicers, mixers, vertical cutters, patty making machines
- transport food or supplies to serving areas
- ensure that areas are properly set up
- assemble and replenish food, supplies, and equipment as required
- ensure proper temperature of food in steam tables and counter display
- take orders, portion and serve food to customers
- record portions served according to procedure
- remove, cover, wrap, label, store, rotate and discard food and condiments as directed
- clear soiled dishes and refuse from tables
- scrape refuse into garbage containers
- load trays and soiled dishes on conveyers, racks, and carts
- remove and dispose of trash
- set up and operate dish machine
- clean assigned area following proper sanitary procedures
- sweep and mop floors
- vacuum carpets and empty ash trays
- maintain supplies and equipment in assigned work areas
- report equipment malfunctions
- assist in monitoring work and training employees
- perform other related duties incidental to the work described
