Job Description

The Malcom Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located in Gainesville, Florida, is a leading healthcare establishment dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate medical services to U.S. veterans. As a vital part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, this medical center is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of veterans through innovative and specialized care. Recognized for its adherence to high standards of medical excellence and veteran-focused services, the center operates with a mission to uphold the ideals of the American republic and support veterans with dignity and respect. This federal institution offers a range of employment opportunities with secure, full-time, permanent positions that come with an attractive range of benefits designed to support both employees and their families.

The position of Food Service Worker at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center represents a crucial role within the healthcare facility's food service operations. This role is centered on efficiently delivering food services that align with patients' and veterans' nutritional needs while maintaining stringent safety and sanitation standards. The Food Service Worker is responsible for a variety of tasks involving food preparation, serving, and cleaning duties within the hospital's cafeteria and patient dining areas. This position requires proficiency in specialized food service procedures, knowledge of modified diets, computer proficiency to manage orders and supplies, as well as dishwashing and storage operations.

This full-time role offers an hourly wage range between $19.96 and $23.29 and is classified under the WG 4 pay scale without promotion potential. It is a non supervisory position that entails working rotating shifts with weekend duties across two locations in Florida — Gainesville and Lake City. The typical work schedules vary between 5:30 AM and 8:00 PM, accommodating shifts that include early morning, afternoon, and evening hours.

Physical demands for this role include continuous standing and walking, frequent stooping, reaching, pulling, and bending, as well as occasional heavy lifting with assistance. Ideal candidates will also demonstrate reliability in performing their duties with minimal supervision while ensuring compliance with federal employment policies and health regulations. The role emphasizes a commitment to maintaining a high-quality food service environment that supports patient recovery and satisfaction within a respectful and orderly atmosphere.

Those appointed to this position will be subjected to a one-year probationary period to evaluate their performance and conduct to ensure their continued employment advances the interests of the agency and public. This position does not require any specific educational qualifications but expects candidates to have hands-on experience or training relevant to the food service industry. This is a direct-hire position open to qualified U.S. citizens and nationals, with an emphasis on a fair and transparent hiring process that values veterans and career transition applicants. The role is integral to the operational success of the medical center, fostering an environment where nutritional services play a key role in veteran care and support.
