Job Description
The University of California, Berkeley is a prestigious world-leading institution renowned for its academic and research excellence, public mission, and commitment to equity and social justice. Founded in 1868, UC Berkeley has a rich history of driving innovation and creating significant intellectual, economic, and social value globally. The university fosters a diverse, inclusive community and actively promotes an environment where students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds feel welcome and empowered to thrive. UC Berkeley's culture of openness, freedom, and belonging sets it apart as a unique place dedicated to educational excellence and social justice. The campus supports its employees through professional development opportunities, including providing full-time staff with at least 80 hours of paid time per year for professional growth, supported by numerous employee resource groups that promote inclusion and collegiality.
Within the Division of Student Affairs, the Residential Student Services Programs portfolio includes Berkeley Dining, a self-operated dining service dedicated to culinary excellence, social responsibility, and supporting the living and learning environment of its patrons. Serving more than 12,000 meal plan holders, Berkeley Dining delivers over 5 million meals a year through 14 facilities, including all-you-care-to-eat dining, retail dining, stadium concessions, training tables, early childhood education meal production, and catering services. It operates seven days a week for seventeen hours daily and employs approximately 450 full- and part-time staff along with about 400 student workers.
The Food Service Manager role is vital to Berkeley Dining’s operational success. This full-time, exempt, monthly-paid position manages day-to-day dining and food service activities in partnership with chefs and management. The manager is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient preparation, service, and presentation of food and beverages, and maintaining cleanliness and hygiene across dining facilities. In addition to operational oversight, this position provides leadership and supervision to food service staff, focusing on exceptional customer service, adherence to food safety standards, policy compliance, and loss prevention. The Food Service Manager also supports team development through training, performance evaluations, and collaboration on professional growth initiatives.
Further responsibilities include managing inventory, cash handling, maintenance schedules, and facilitating communication within the team. The manager plays a key role in customer engagement, addressing inquiries related to meal plans, refunds, and services, while helping coordinate special events and supporting student involvement. The position demands flexibility in work hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, to meet operational needs. The Food Service Manager must hold a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record, as the role often involves transporting materials and operating university-owned vehicles.
The posted salary range for this position is $64,000 to $70,500 annually, reflecting qualifications, experience, skills, and compliance with university policies. Candidates will find comprehensive benefits through the University of California’s Compensation and Benefits program, which supports employees' health, financial security, and professional development. This role exemplifies UC Berkeley’s dedication to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, with a strong focus on health and safety standards, labor law adherence, and nondiscriminatory practices. Prospective applicants are encouraged to submit their applications on or before the first review date of July 21, 2026.
