Job Description
The School Board of Broward County, Florida, is a well-established government entity dedicated to delivering quality education and support services to students and the surrounding community. As one of the largest public school districts in the United States, Broward County Schools is committed to fostering excellence through various educational programs and operational support roles. Among these roles is the Food & Nutrition Services Cook and Baker (Assistant IIA) position, which plays a critical role in ensuring that students receive nutritious and well-prepared meals every day.
This position is hourly and offers a competitive rate of $17.23, with a typical workday consisting of 6.75 hours. The role is classified as nonexempt and is part of the Food & Nutrition Services Department. This department is responsible for the planning, preparation, and distribution of school meals that meet federal and state nutritional guidelines. The Cook and Baker will work at Driftwood Middle School, following a 192-day work calendar, which aligns with the academic school year.
The main goal of this role is to perform skilled work in the preparation and service of nutritionally adequate and reimbursable meals. The employee is tasked with meeting food production deadlines and assuming responsibility for the quality of food products served. This involves not only cooking and baking but also ensuring adherence to food safety regulations and maintaining a clean and sanitary work environment. The Cook and Baker will be part of a team dedicated to delivering exceptional service to students, staff, and visitors while maintaining compliance with all food safety protocols outlined in the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP).
Key responsibilities include following daily work schedules for food production, service, and cleaning, participating in ongoing state-approved training related to food safety and nutrition, and demonstrating professionalism when interacting with various stakeholders, including students, parents, and school staff. The cook will operate point of sale equipment in accordance with federal guidelines when assigned and assist with kitchen duties such as pre-preparation, cooking, service, cleanup, inventory management, and proper storage of supplies and food items.
The position requires diligent monitoring and recording of food preparation times, quantities, and temperatures using production worksheets to ensure consistency and compliance with standardized recipes. Safe operation of food service equipment and proper sanitation practices are mandatory, alongside the disposal of waste and maintaining personal hygiene standards. Additionally, the role includes logistical duties such as driving vans for food delivery between sites, refueling, and cleaning vehicles.
The School Board of Broward County offers new hires a minimum salary hiring point within the assigned salary range. This role demands teamwork, attention to detail, and a commitment to food safety standards consistent with federal and state regulations. Participation in training programs is encouraged to enhance job-related skills and maintain proficiency. Working in this environment provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the well-being of students and the broader educational mission of Broward County Schools, supporting their health and academic success through quality nutrition services.
