The Food Service Assistant position within the Nutrition Services department is a part-time role with a 0.50 full-time equivalent (FTE) schedule, primarily during the day. The salary range for this role is competitive, ranging from $19.29 to $29.59 per hour, with the final hiring rate depending on factors such as education, experience, training, seniority, and applicable collective bargaining agreements. This position supports hospital food and catering operations by preparing, serving, and delivering meals in compliance with HACCP guidelines for safe food handling. The Food Service Assistant ensures that food is prepared to high standards and that the dining areas are clean and well-maintained.
The role includes tasks such as mixing, assembling, portioning, serving, and storing food, as well as operating dishwashing equipment and performing cleaning duties. Employees may also handle cafeteria cashier responsibilities, manage food transport, and maintain station cleanliness. This position requires strong customer service skills, effective communication, and a solid understanding of sanitation and food safety standards. Working in this position requires physical activity such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods, along with the ability to function efficiently in a busy and sometimes noisy environment.

Job Requirements
- Food Handlers Card - Oregon required
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to stand and move continuously during shifts
- Ability to work in noisy environments
- Ability to follow HACCP and safety protocols

Job Qualifications
- High school diploma preferred or equivalent
- Minimum of 1 year previous work experience preferred
- Retail food service experience preferred
- Strong customer service skills
- Knowledge and understanding of proper food handling and sanitation
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to effectively communicate to safely perform functions of the role
Job Duties
- Prepare, mix, assemble, portion, serve and store food following applicable guidelines
- Operate dish machine, wash pots and perform heavy cleaning duties following safety and sanitation guidelines
- Transport equipment, food, supplies and trash as directed
- May act as cafeteria cashier running the cash register
- Follow guidelines for assigned station set-up and clean-up
- Perform other duties as assigned
