Job Description

The Maritime Academy of Toledo (TMAT) is a distinguished educational institution dedicated to providing a unique maritime-themed learning environment for students. Located in Toledo, Ohio, TMAT combines rigorous academic standards with specialized maritime training, fostering a culture of excellence, discipline, and environmental stewardship. As a charter public school, TMAT emphasizes student well-being, leadership development, and community engagement, preparing students for successful futures both academically and in maritime careers. TMAT’s commitment to health, nutrition, and sustainability is reflected in its food service programs, which align with state and national nutrition standards while integrating local and sustainable food sourcing when possible.

The Food Service Worker position at TMAT is a crucial role that supports the academy’s mission by delivering nutritious, balanced meals that meet USDA and Ohio School Nutrition Program guidelines. This hands-on role involves preparing and serving breakfast, lunch, and snacks to students while promoting healthy eating habits and environmental consciousness within the school’s unique maritime-themed setting. The worker ensures all meals comply with the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, contributing to the overall health and academic success of the student population.

In addition to food preparation and service, the Food Service Worker maintains exemplary food safety and sanitation standards to protect student health and comply with state regulations. This includes adhering to personal hygiene protocols, equipment cleaning, and work surface sanitizing. The role also involves assisting with menu adaptations that incorporate locally sourced or regionally themed ingredients, such as those from the Great Lakes region, enhancing students’ connection to their environment.

The Food Service Worker plays an active part in meal counting and reporting to ensure accurate documentation for reimbursement purposes. Operating point-of-sale systems and manual counting during meal periods is a key responsibility, requiring attention to detail and accuracy. The role fosters a positive cafeteria atmosphere by delivering friendly and professional service to students and staff alike.

Moreover, the Food Service Worker supports compliance with food allergy and dietary restriction protocols, contributing to student safety and accommodation. Participation in wellness and nutrition initiatives, such as health fairs and tasting events themed around the maritime culture, highlights the academy’s unique approach to integrated education and health promotion.

This position requires physical stamina, including prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting, as well as capability in managing food service equipment efficiently during busy meal times. TMAT values a collaborative team member who can adapt to diverse student needs, communicate effectively, and uphold high standards of cleanliness and food safety consistently.

Employment at TMAT is inclusive and values diversity, welcoming candidates from varied backgrounds. The position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on student health and learning in an engaging and supportive maritime academic environment. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their resume and cover letter for the 2026-2027 academic year, contributing to the academy’s legacy of excellence in education and student wellness.
