Job Description

California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) is a state-wide initiative designed to empower and deploy a diverse workforce of climate and environmental leaders dedicated to creating impactful, community-driven change. The program offers over 400 full-time fellowship positions across California, targeting emerging leaders passionate about climate action. These paid fellowships provide substantial professional development opportunities, with dedicated training hours to equip fellows with the skills and experience necessary for advancing in climate-related careers. The 2026-2027 fellowship cycle runs for 11 months, from September 21, 2026, to August 13, 2027, and includes a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week. It is structured to provide hands-on experience with organizations that focus on critical environmental issues, such as wildfire resiliency, urban greening, and organic waste diversion, thereby mobilizing communities toward effective climate solutions.

Hollywood Food Coalition (HoFoCo) is a long-standing nonprofit organization in Los Angeles dedicated to combating food insecurity while simultaneously addressing food waste and environmental sustainability. For over 35 years, HoFoCo has been a vital community resource that serves as a hub for food rescue and redistribution within LA County. HoFoCo’s mission centers on supporting vulnerable populations by partnering with numerous local nonprofits that provide a range of social services, including outreach to the unhoused and health services to underserved communities. Through the Community Exchange Program, HoFoCo has rescued and distributed more than 12 million pounds of food since 2020, impacting over 200 organizations. This fellowship with HoFoCo offers a unique opportunity to engage directly in the intersection of climate action, social justice, and community resilience.

The Food Rescue Fellow position is a pivotal role within the California Climate Action Corps Fellowship, based in Los Angeles. The fellow will take a hands-on role in managing food rescue operations, which involve recovering surplus food and redistributing it efficiently to nonprofits and community partners in need. This role not only contributes to food security but also significantly reduces organic waste, thereby lowering the carbon footprint of the local food system. The fellow will engage in logistic coordination, volunteer management, and outreach initiatives aimed at increasing program visibility and impact. Alongside these responsibilities, the fellow will have access to mentorship from experienced professionals in the food rescue space and will participate in substantial professional development training to enhance environmental and organizational expertise. The position includes a stipend of $35,250 distributed over the service term, education awards, healthcare coverage, and additional benefits like childcare assistance and student loan forbearance for qualifying individuals.

The fellowship is designed for individuals ready to commit fully to an 11-month program that offers a blend of practical service experience and professional growth in a dynamic nonprofit environment. This role is ideal for candidates interested in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, public service, and community engagement, especially those who want to make a tangible difference in urban food systems and environmental sustainability. The Food Rescue Fellow will expand their skills in community outreach, data analysis, and program coordination while working alongside passionate leaders and organizations dedicated to equity and climate justice in Los Angeles.
