Job Description

Child Nutrition Services (CNS) is a vital department within the Wake County Public School System dedicated to providing nutritious meals to students across various school sites. CNS plays a crucial role in promoting healthy eating habits among children, ensuring that students receive balanced meals that meet federal nutrition standards. Committed to fostering a positive dining experience, CNS employees work tirelessly to prepare, cook, and serve meals that not only nourish but also encourage lifelong healthy choices. As a public school system entity, CNS operates under strict guidelines to maintain the highest safety and sanitation standards, all while ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all students. This department is an essential part of the school community, contributing significantly to students' overall well-being and academic success by addressing one of their fundamental needs - nutrition.

The Cashier Assistant position within Child Nutrition Services is a dynamic and essential role based at various school sites. This position is classified under the Noncertified Grade 17 pay grade and is a nonexempt role with a work week schedule from Monday to Friday, although shift times may vary depending on the school assignment. The Cashier Assistant is responsible for both food preparation and cashier duties, providing a blend of culinary and customer service functions. The role requires preparing, cooking, and serving meals, including salads and a la-carte items while strictly following standardized recipes to maintain consistency and quality. The Cashier Assistant ensures accurate documentation of food preparation, helping to maintain compliance with nutrition guidelines and food safety standards.

In addition to culinary responsibilities, the Cashier Assistant serves as a cashier in the school cafeteria, handling money collection, processing meal counts, and recording payments accurately using a computerized point of sale system. This role demands meticulous attention to detail in managing transactions and maintaining financial accuracy, including assisting with deposits. Candidates must be ServSafe Certified or able to obtain the certification within 90 days of employment to comply with food safety regulations. The Cashier Assistant must also uphold cleanliness standards by maintaining kitchen equipment, utensils, and dining areas according to sanitation codes. This involves regular cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing surfaces.

Effective communication and excellent customer service skills are essential, as the role requires interaction with students, parents, school staff, and the broader community. The position fosters a teamwork environment but also requires the ability to work independently, solve problems, and meet deadlines without constant supervision. Physical demands include the ability to perform tasks that require lifting a minimum of 40 pounds, standing for extended periods, and working in both office and cafeteria environments that involve exposure to various equipment. Overall, the Cashier Assistant is a pivotal role that supports the smooth operation of Child Nutrition Services and contributes to the health and satisfaction of the student population.
