The Fire Systems Technician - Fire Alarm position is a seasonal contract role supporting the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program through the Antarctic Support Contract. The position involves performing maintenance and installation tasks on fire alarm systems under the supervision of a Fire Systems Technician - Special Hazards/Supervisor. The technician will work according to the Antarctic Support Contract schedule and is expected to maintain and ensure the proper operation of various fire detection, alarm, and reporting systems in an extreme environment.

This role is particularly demanding as it requires working outdoors in the challenging conditions of Antarctica, including exposure to extreme cold and high winds. The technician will conduct inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance on fire protection systems, collaborating closely with other NICET certified technicians and various departments such as Facilities Management and Engineers. This interaction ensures that work plans are developed and executed effectively while materials and schedules are carefully coordinated.

Among the core responsibilities is the winterization and de-winterization of fire alarm and detection systems to ensure year-round functionality. Accurate documentation is critical, including work plans, hazard analyses, job safety analyses, and compliance with safety codes such as NFPA. The technician must respond promptly to emergency service calls, even outside normal working hours, emphasizing the importance of reliability and readiness in this role.

Candidates for this position must possess a High School diploma or GED and hold a minimum NICET II Fire Alarm certification. They should have at least four years of documented experience with fire protection systems, including installation, testing, and maintenance tasks. Proficiency in reading design drawings, specifications, and troubleshooting guides is essential. Because the job involves computer-based labor and inventory tracking systems, basic to intermediate computer skills are required, and a willingness to learn new applications is expected.

Physical demands include the ability to lift heavy equipment, perform climbing and crawling activities, and work in extreme cold environments. Successful applicants must also pass medical and dental examinations mandated by the NSF, undergo drug screening and background checks, and hold a valid US driver's license. US citizenship is necessary due to the requirements for facility access and security clearances at the Antarctic worksite.
