Job Description

Thermo Fisher Scientific is a world-leading provider of scientific instrumentation, reagents, consumables, software, and services. The company is dedicated to enabling its customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer by supporting scientific research, healthcare, and laboratory processes across numerous industries including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, environmental analysis, and academia. As a global technology and innovation leader, Thermo Fisher Scientific invests heavily in research and development to provide state-of-the-art products and solutions that empower scientists and researchers to achieve their goals with greater efficiency and accuracy. Within the United States, the company offers a supportive work environment with a commitment to employee development, well-being, and meaningful career opportunities. Their workplace culture emphasizes continuous learning, teamwork, and excellence in customer service which drives their success on an international scale.

The Field Service Engineer I (FSE I) role at Thermo Fisher Scientific is an entry-level position ideal for recent graduates or individuals embarking on a career in field service and technical support within laboratory and scientific equipment environments. The FSE I supports installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of analytical and laboratory instrumentation across an assigned territory, typically covering customer laboratories, research facilities, manufacturing sites, and universities. This position demands regular travel, technical aptitude, and strong customer service skills. Under the supervision of senior engineers and technical support teams, the FSE I learns to diagnose mechanical, electrical, vacuum, software, and networking-related issues and executes service tasks efficiently and competently.

Besides technical fieldwork, the role stresses documentation accuracy, communication with customers for scheduling and updates, and supporting operator training to help clients maximize instrument performance. Additionally, FSE I personnel frequently collaborate cross-functionally with applications specialists, sales teams, and engineering groups to resolve customer challenges and escalate complex issues when necessary. The work schedule is typically first shift days with an expected travel rate of 50 to 75 percent within the territory to service and install equipment onsite.

This position offers a competitive salary in the range of $25.60 to $38.40 per hour based in Maryland and may include an annual variable bonus based on performance results. Thermo Fisher Scientific also provides an extensive Total Rewards compensation package, including access to national medical, dental, and vision plans, health incentives, paid time off, parental leave, retirement savings plans, employee stock purchase opportunities, and other family support benefits. The FSE I position is well suited for self-motivated candidates with a strong foundation in engineering, electronics, or scientific disciplines eager to develop specialized skills and contribute to impactful scientific work.
