Job Description

This Executive Chef role is based at one of Stellar Senior Living's large senior living communities in Missoula, Montana. It is a critical leadership position requiring culinary expertise, team management skills, budgeting acumen, and a dedication to providing exceptional dining experiences tailored to the unique needs of seniors. The Executive Chef oversees all food service operations including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special event meals. This role not only ensures senior residents receive nutritious and delicious meals but also supervises kitchen staff, managing personnel performance and compliance with health standards. The executive chef is responsible for menu planning, cost control, inventory management, and maintaining the highest sanitation standards aligned with Department of Health regulations.

Ideal candidates will have a strong culinary background, highlighted by a Culinary Arts degree from a recognized institution and several years of experience working in significant food service operations. Leadership experience in hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising kitchen teams is essential. The Executive Chef must also be knowledgeable about special diets, culinary techniques, menu design, and food presentation suited for an older population. Computer proficiency and a valid ServSafe certificate are required to handle administrative and safety responsibilities effectively.

Job Requirements

  • Culinary Arts degree from recognized school
  • Minimum two years experience as Executive Chef or Assistant Executive Chef
  • Five years experience in kitchen work
  • Over two years experience managing food service personnel
  • ServSafe certification
  • Ability to operate computer equipment
  • Knowledge of culinary terminology
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills

Job Qualifications

  • Experience with special diets and meal preparation for large groups
  • Culinary Arts degree from recognized school
  • Minimum two years experience as Executive Chef or Assistant Executive Chef in comparable food service operation
  • Five years kitchen work experience in medium to large organizations
  • Over two years experience in hiring, training and managing food service personnel
  • Knowledge of culinary techniques, menu design and food preparation
  • Familiarity with culinary terminology
  • Ability to operate computer equipment for data entry and retrieval
  • Current ServSafe certificate

Job Duties

  • Plan, test and assess cost of new menus and menu items
  • Clean and supervise cleaning of work area, equipment and utensils
  • Maintain sanitation standards compliant with Department of Health
  • Lead workers including cooks and other food service personnel in preparation, cooking and serving
  • Participate in interviewing and selection of food service personnel
  • Manage hiring, termination, promotion, discipline and corrective actions
  • Schedule staff and manage leave requests
  • Analyze financial performance and adjust operations accordingly
  • Oversee purchasing and inventory of food products and kitchen supplies
  • Conduct month-end inventory accurately
  • Inspect quality and quantity of deliveries
