Job Description
Michaels is the leading arts and crafts retail chain in North America, operating over 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Irving, Texas, Michaels has built a strong reputation as the premier destination for creative and celebratory products, services, and experiences. The company also owns Artistree, a manufacturer specializing in custom and specialty framing merchandise. Michaels' mission is to fuel the joy of creativity and celebration for all its customers, providing a wide assortment of unique art supplies, framing, scrapbooking, and home décor items. By embracing a culture of creativity, customer experience, and community engagement, Michaels continues to grow and positively impact its customers and communities nationwide.
This role, based at the S. Jos-Westgate location in California, offers an exciting opportunity to be part of the Michaels family. The position involves planning, coordinating, and facilitating events within the store, including children's birthday parties and various craft classes or events. For individuals passionate about creativity, customer engagement, and delivering memorable experiences, this role presents the perfect blend of customer service, event management, and retail operations. The employment type is full-time/part-time with a competitive hourly wage ranging from $18.45 to $21.40, with eligibility for overtime compensation according to state and local regulations.
As an Event Coordinator at Michaels, you will have the unique responsibility of creating stress-free, fun, and engaging experiences for guests of all ages—ranging from young children to seniors. Your role will be vital in helping customers celebrate special occasions with creative projects, hands-on craft sessions, face painting, and party add-ons like goody bags and balloons. You will actively engage attendees, providing instruction and support to ensure customer satisfaction and a positive, memorable event atmosphere. Your ability to adapt and communicate effectively with customers and store teams will be essential in adjusting plans based on real-time feedback and requirements.
Beyond event coordination, this position requires delivering exceptional customer service by assisting guests in shopping, locating products, learning about Michaels’ rewards program, and facilitating enrollments for private label credit cards. The role also includes operational responsibilities, such as unloading deliveries, merchandising, maintaining store cleanliness and recovery standards, supporting safety programs, and adhering to company policies and standard operating procedures. The ability to handle multiple tasks, maintain an upbeat attitude, and work collaboratively with team members is critical for success in this dynamic retail environment.
Michaels is committed to inclusivity, providing reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities, and embodying its core values of creativity, respect, and teamwork. The store environment is climate controlled with some stockrooms and occasional outdoor duties, reflecting a safe and supportive workplace. With the potential for varied shifts including nights, weekends, and early mornings, this position requires flexibility and a proactive, customer-focused mindset.
This role is ideal for individuals who are energetic, organized, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience working with children and conducting children’s events is highly preferred, alongside a background in retail and customer service. Physical demands include standing for long periods, bending, lifting, and the ability to use ladders or similar equipment for shelf access.
Overall, this position offers a chance to contribute to a beloved and growing retail brand while engaging creatively with customers and providing joyful experiences. Michaels supports its team members with comprehensive benefits such as health, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) with employer match, tuition assistance, and various employee perks, fostering a supportive and rewarding workplace culture.
