Job Description
The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition is a passionate and dedicated non-profit organization committed to the development, promotion, and preservation of the Towpath Trail. This trail spans across the counties of Summit, Stark, and Tuscarawas in Ohio, serving as a vital recreational and historical asset that connects numerous communities and enhances outdoor experiences for residents and visitors alike. The Towpath Trail is not just a path; it represents an important cultural and environmental resource that promotes health, well-being, environmental stewardship, and historic preservation. Through a combination of extensive trail networks, educational programs, and community engagement initiatives, the Coalition plays an essential role in fostering a deeper appreciation for natural spaces and the rich history of the Ohio & Erie Canalway region.
As a non-profit organization, the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition actively organizes various events and fundraising activities geared towards ensuring the ongoing enhancement, maintenance, and expansion of the Towpath Trail. These efforts contribute significantly to supporting regional economic development by encouraging tourism, outdoor recreation, and active lifestyles within the communities it serves. The Coalition’s work is underpinned by a mission to create inclusive, accessible, and vibrant outdoor spaces that enhance quality of life and connect people to nature, history, and each other.
The role of the Event Coordinator within the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition is a vital and engaging position that directly contributes to the success of the organization’s mission. Based out of the downtown Akron office, this full-time position involves coordinating, managing, and supporting a variety of fundraising events, educational programs, and organizational projects throughout the year. The Event Coordinator leads the planning and execution of four major annual fundraising events, including the Canal Boat Captain's Ball Virtual Auction, the Congressman Ralph Regula Memorial Ride, the Towpath 50 bicycle ride, and the Bike, Hike and Brew event. Beyond these key events, the Coordinator co-manages the Taste of Tusc event and offers support on additional events such as the Towpath Century Ride, Towpath Classic Golf Outing, and Towpath Freedom 5K.
This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about event planning, community involvement, and contributing to a meaningful cause. Beyond event management, the Event Coordinator extends their impact by supporting the Coalition’s broader resource development and educational outreach initiatives. This includes assisting in cultivating corporate and individual donors crucial for sustaining the Coalition’s projects and growth. Collaboration is key in this role; working closely with peer coordinators and team members to execute a Resource Development Plan that aligns with the overall mission and goals of the organization is essential.
While formal experience in marketing, hospitality management, public relations, or event planning can be advantageous, the Coalition values a candidate’s dedication, communication skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively. Flexibility is a necessity due to the need to work some evenings and weekends to ensure events are successful and well-attended. This position represents a unique opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organization while gaining valuable experience in non-profit operations and event coordination. The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition fosters a supportive and professional work environment that encourages growth and values the meaningful community impact of its strategic initiatives.
