The Environmental Services Associate I position at University Hospital is a full-time role that plays a critical part in creating a clean, safe, and welcoming environment conducive to patient healing and staff efficiency. This position involves working rotating weekends and holidays with eligibility for shift differentials depending on the assigned shift. Shifts are standardized, including first shift (8:00am - 4:30pm), mid-shift discharge (2:00pm - 10:30pm for discharges only), second shift (3:00pm - 11:30pm), mid-shift afternoon (5:00pm - 1:30am), third shift evening (9:00pm - 5:30am for operating room only), and third shift overnight (midnight to 8:30am).

Environmental Services Associates provide essential cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection services throughout patient rooms, offices, clinics, clinical and procedural areas, and public spaces in compliance with infection control protocols and hospital policies. Their work supports patient safety and helps maintain smooth care delivery by consistently ensuring high standards of environmental cleanliness. They are trained to clean high-acuity clinical and procedural areas safely, using approved tools and products while following strict sanitation protocols. The role also requires the safe removal of hazardous and biohazardous waste according to regulatory safety and infection prevention standards.

Attendance and punctuality are vital given the direct impact of the role on patient care and hospital operations. Team members are expected to report reliably and maintain communication with clinical staff to support optimal care flow. Physical demands include reaching, standing for extended periods, squatting, bending, and lifting or carrying supplies weighing 35 pounds or more for up to 80% of the workday. Environmental Services Associates must also be capable of operating light floor-cleaning equipment, climbing ladders, and performing cleaning duties in specialized areas such as Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Mother-Baby units, NICU, Operating Rooms, and Emergency Departments.

New employees in this role do not require prior experience as training is provided, but the ability to wear and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) effectively is mandatory. This includes gowns, gloves, goggles, and rubber-soled, closed-toe shoes.
