The role of the Elementary School Cafeteria Manager II is vital within the food service department at Ocean View Elementary. This position is classified under Food Service and is a full-time role, offering 1.0 FTE status with a 9-month work year and 8-hour workdays. The salary ranges from $20.14 to $21.19 per hour depending on experience. This role is responsible for the comprehensive management of the school cafeteria operations, ensuring the timely preparation and delivery of meals aligned with federal and state nutrition guidelines and food safety standards. The manager oversees kitchen staff, maintains sanitary conditions, manages inventory and food supplies, as well as maintains detailed records in compliance with the National School Lunch Program and USDA guidelines.
This position involves more than simple meal preparation; it includes supervising cafeteria assistants, coordinating schedules and training, handling cash and point of sale systems, and ensuring regulatory compliance related to sanitation, food safety, and meal programs. The Elementary School Cafeteria Manager II performs critical inspections of food deliveries and kitchen equipment temperatures to adhere to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) procedures. The role demands strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and efficient management of resources and personnel in a fast-paced environment.
Environmental demands of this position include standing, walking, and lifting items up to 40 pounds, as well as the ability to handle the mental demands of working with a diverse population of students, staff, and the public. This job also requires passing the ASD Serving It Safe food safety course within 21 days of hire and passing the associated exam. Job Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent
- Two years of related work experience may be considered in lieu of education
- One year of food service experience in general food preparation, proper food handling, food safety, and sanitation
- Proficiency in cashiering and working with Microsoft Office
- Must be proficient in basic math such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication
- Must attend the four-hour ASD Serving It Safe food safety course and pass the associated examination within 21 calendar days from date of hire into the position
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One year of food service experience in general food preparation, proper food handling, food safety, and sanitation
- Proficiency in cashiering and working with Microsoft Office
- Proficient in basic math including addition, subtraction, and multiplication
- Successful completion of the four-hour ASD Serving It Safe food safety course and passing the associated exam within 21 days of hire
- Preferred one year of supervisory experience including planning and directing employees' daily work schedules and tasks
- Preferred experience providing training in staff kitchen responsibilities
- Preferred knowledge of pre-plate and centralized food preparation and delivery
- Preferred previous experience as a food service manager
- Preferred experience with food service point of sale and inventory management systems
Job Duties
- Responsible for management of all food and supply inventories, ordering, production records, cash handling procedures, bank deposits and timely submission of any required paperwork to the Student Nutrition office
- Performs tasks to ensure meals are prepared on schedule for an estimated number of students
- Monitors and records all kitchen equipment temperatures, proper food heating and cooling times and temperatures according to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) requirements
- Resolves complaints in a timely and equitable manner and communicates concerns to supervisor
- Responsible for training, supervision, and evaluation of school cafeteria assistants
- Coordinates employee timecards and leave requests with supervisor as needed
- Ensures timely preparation of all meal programs, and organizes and assigns work to kitchen staff
- Ensures that regulations pertaining to sanitation and food safety practices are observed and maintained
- Responsible for maintaining National School Lunch Program (NSLP) compliance of Free and Reduced meals at the point of sale, as well as keeping accurate records of the same in accordance with Student Nutrition Department and USDA requirements
- Submits maintenance requests and reports any major maintenance problems to supervisor
- Adheres to all Student Nutrition Department and Anchorage School District policies and procedures
- Responsible for knowing and understanding USDA and State guidelines for meal pattern and service requirements
- Effectively plans, organizes and makes decisions independently in a fast-paced work environment within limited timelines
- Assigns and directs student aides and substitute employees as needed
- Establishes and maintains positive and effective working relationships with a broad diversity of students, staff, other Anchorage School District staff, and the public
