The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO) Specialist plays a critical role within the healthcare sector, dedicated to the operation and management of the ECMO program. This position is based in a hospital setting where advanced medical technology and patient care converge to support patients requiring highly specialized life support. The ECMO Specialist works under the supervision and guidance of the ECMO Coordinator, ensuring that patients ranging from neonatal to geriatric receive expert care during ECMO therapy. This role demands a high level of expertise in monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining the ECMO circuit and its components to ensure its function and integrity are uncompromised throughout treatment.

The ECMO Specialist collaborates closely with bedside nurses and other healthcare professionals to monitor adequate perfusion, maintain acid-base balance, hemodynamic stability, and other vital parameters as ordered by the ECMO service. The ability to manage complex medical equipment and effectively administer blood products and medications safely is fundamental to this role. Moreover, the ECMO Specialist is trained to manage Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) when connected to the ECMO circuit and may facilitate the patient’s participation in Physical and Occupational Therapy sessions to promote recovery.

Operating with precision, the ECMO Specialist anticipates and manages crisis and emergency situations, performing technical tasks accurately and safely with adherence to institutional policy and procedures. The role also involves quality control, assurance, and preventive maintenance responsibilities, contributing to the overall effectiveness and safety of the ECMO program. Continuous professional development and learning are key aspects, with the ECMO Specialist required to engage annually in educational activities or pursue advanced academic education to sharpen their skills and knowledge. The role supports quality improvement initiatives by identifying areas for improvement, planning interventions, and evaluating outcomes to establish best practices.

In addition to patient care responsibilities, the ECMO Specialist supports departmental operations by assisting other units as needed for staffing or patient care. They collaborate with the ECMO Medical Director and Coordinator in the collection and review of quality data, benchmarking against internal and external standards to optimize performance. An exciting aspect of this role includes participation in domestic and international transport for ECMO patients, involving ground, helicopter, and fixed-wing flights, ensuring specialized care continuity during transfers.
