The position of Director of Event Strategy at Cooley is an essential role within the Marketing and Business Development team. This strategic leadership role is designed for a seasoned professional responsible for shaping and executing the firm’s enterprise-wide event strategy. The Director will craft innovative, scalable frameworks and experiential strategies that elevate brand presence, deepen client relationships, and drive demand generation through exceptional and measurable event experiences. This role requires a combination of creativity, strategic thinking, and operational excellence to manage a portfolio of events ranging from regional activations to high-profile global client experiences. The individual will lead a team of event professionals and collaborate cross-functionally to ensure that every event aligns with Cooley’s core narrative, positioning Cooley as a premier firm in the competitive legal marketplace.

Specifically, the Director will develop and refine 'event playbooks' leveraging data analytics to transition the company from reactive event planning to a proactive, optimized engagement model. They will oversee major signature events like C-suite summits and bespoke hospitality experiences that serve as key brand differentiators for high-value clients. Integral to the role is the responsibility for ensuring a seamless integration of the event function into the broader client lifecycle – including targeting, execution, and robust follow-up business development activities. The Director will also manage a significant budget and vendor relationships, serving as the principal liaison with premium hospitality and event agencies to guarantee consistent operational excellence and ROI. Technology oversight is a key component, requiring expertise in platforms such as Cvent and TicketManager to enhance data capture and workflow automation.

The role demands a candidate with over a decade of relevant experience in event marketing and strategy within complex, matrixed organizations, preferably in professional services or B2B environments. Leadership skills are crucial, as the candidate will supervise direct reports, foster professional development, and participate in hiring and performance management processes. Exceptional communication, analytical capabilities, and a strong grasp of current marketing technologies and best practices are essential for success in this role. The firm offers competitive compensation with an annual salary range of $225,000 to $275,000, commensurate with experience and geography, alongside a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employee well-being, family needs, and professional growth.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10+ years of marketing events strategy and execution experience
  • 5+ years in management roles
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite iManage and other firm applications
  • Ability to work extended and weekend hours
  • Ability to travel significantly
  • Expertise in marketing best practices and digital marketing
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Experience working in a matrixed organization preferably professional services or B2B
  • Ability to lead and coach a team effectively

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10+ years of experience in marketing events strategy and execution within matrixed organizations
  • 5+ years of management experience with proven leadership and coaching skills
  • Expertise in marketing best practices digital marketing measurement and workflow management
  • Proven success in developing multi-channel strategies under budgetary constraints
  • Strong understanding of performance metrics analytics and data-driven strategy formulation
  • Exceptional collaboration communication and influencing skills with senior leadership
  • Proficiency in CRM and marketing business development technologies
  • MBA or advanced degree preferred
  • Experience in professional services environment preferred
  • Experience managing large teams preferred

Job Duties

  • Define and lead the firm’s enterprise event strategy ensuring all experiential touchpoints support long-term growth and client engagement
  • Lead a team of event professionals driving alignment between local and global events to support firm goals
  • Develop and implement scalable event playbooks and data-backed frameworks for optimized market performance
  • Lead strategy and design for marquee events such as C-suite summits, bespoke hospitality, and marquee tournaments
  • Translate regional business objectives into tailored event strategies reinforcing local market presence
  • Integrate events into the client lifecycle ensuring pre-event targeting and post-event business development
  • Establish and monitor KPIs using data and client feedback to report ROI and strategic impact
  • Collaborate with marketing leadership to ensure events reflect the firm’s narrative and brand identity
  • Manage relationships with event agencies, hospitality partners, and venues ensuring operational excellence
  • Oversee annual event portfolio budget and resource allocation to maximize visibility and business development
  • Lead business ownership of the event technology stack enhancing data capture and workflow automation
  • Provide day-to-day supervision and professional development of direct reports
  • Ensure compliance with firm policies and manage staffing and time-off approvals
  • Participate in hiring, performance appraisals and other employee lifecycle processes
  • Perform all other duties as assigned or required
