Job Description
The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) is a renowned academic health center dedicated to advancing medical education, research, and patient care. With a strong commitment to providing top-tier health services and fostering a supportive environment for staff, students, and patients, UTMB Health plays an essential role in healthcare within its community. The institution operates a complex campus that encompasses numerous facilities serving diverse needs, including parking, housing, recreation, materials supply, gift services, and retail dining. These services are vital for the daily operations and overall experience of the university's population and visitors. As an employer, UTMB Health values diversity, equity, and inclusion, upholding equitable hiring practices and affirmative actions to support veterans and individuals with disabilities.
The Department of Auxiliary Enterprises at UTMB Health is currently seeking a highly capable leader to serve as the Director, responsible for overseeing the operational, budgetary, and personnel functions within the department. This department provides critical services including parking facilities, housing accommodations, recreational fieldhouse operations, school supply management, gift item sales, and retail dining services. The role involves planning and directing day-to-day activities as well as managing both short-term and long-term strategic development to ensure these auxiliary services effectively support the needs of UTMB employees, students, visitors, and patients. The Director will lead marketing initiatives to enhance retail operations and will conduct research to introduce new product lines and promotional strategies aimed at boosting sales and improving service quality.
In this position, the Director will analyze divisional operations to identify necessary adjustments in organizational structure, functionality, and policy, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with institutional guidelines. Budget development, including capital expenditures, personnel costs, and operational expenses, will be a key responsibility, requiring alignment with institution-wide budgetary controls and approval processes. Exceptional communication skills are essential for this role, as the Director is required to interact with executives and leadership teams regularly and develop clear communication materials for department customers.
The Director is also entrusted with the recruitment, retention, and professional development of a diverse team encompassing both professional and support staff. This includes conducting interviews, managing performance appraisal processes, adjusting salaries, implementing staff reclassifications, providing training, and administering disciplinary actions when necessary. The role demands a proactive approach to internal controls and compliance monitoring to safeguard departmental assets and ensure adherence to policies. Moreover, the Director will be responsible for maintaining a robust business continuity plan addressing potential adverse conditions specifically related to parking and retail dining operations. As an essential member of the UTMB Command Team Planning Section, the Director plays a critical role in preparing for and responding to emergency events to maintain continuous service delivery.
Successful candidates for this leadership position will demonstrate strong organizational and strategic planning skills, a track record of managerial and leadership accomplishments, proficiency in analyzing operational data, and the ability to provide effective problem-solving solutions. Experience managing budgets and leading teams is essential, as well as excellent communication capabilities to interface effectively with a variety of stakeholders including physicians and university administrators. This is a unique opportunity to lead a pivotal department within a prestigious academic health institution, contributing to the smooth functioning of vital auxiliary services that impact thousands of individuals daily.
