The University of Florida Health (UF Health) Pediatric Endocrinology outpatient diabetes clinic is a specialized healthcare establishment dedicated to providing exceptional, multidisciplinary care to children and families affected by diabetes. The Diabetes RN/RD and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) position is a vital role within the UF Health Pediatric Endocrinology team, focused on providing ongoing compassionate care and support to pediatric diabetes patients and their families. The professional in this role conducts comprehensive assessments of patients’ and families’ knowledge and adherence to diabetes management regimens to tailor educational needs effectively. They utilize individual, group, and clinic settings to deliver Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) that aligns with the standards set by the American Diabetes Association Recognized Education Program. The RN/RD in this role develops, updates, and maintains diabetes education materials and serves as a primary liaison between patients, families, and medical providers, facilitating continuous communication through telephone, email, and electronic medical record (EMR) messaging regarding glucose management and insulin adjustments.
Additionally, this role involves close collaboration with school clinic staff to promote diabetes safety in educational settings and assist in the creation of Diabetes Medical Management Plans requested by schools. Expertise in diabetes technology, including insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors, and smart insulin pens, is required, with the expectation of becoming certified by individual device manufacturers to educate families effectively. The position also encourages active participation in quality improvement projects and diabetes camps, enhancing professional growth and community engagement. Job Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with BSN
- Current licensure by the State of Florida as Registered Nurse or dietitian/nutritionist
- Certification as Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist within 1 year of hire
- Basic Life Support certification required or to be obtained promptly
- Prefer 3 to 5 years clinical experience including familiarity with diabetes education
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary team
- Strong communication skills
- Motor Vehicle Operator Designation not required
- Eligible for licensure if not currently licensed
Job Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with BSN for nurses
- Current Florida licensure as Registered Nurse or eligible
- Current certification as Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) required within 1 year of hire
- Basic Life Support certification required or to be obtained promptly
- Prefer 3 to 5 years of clinical experience including diabetes education for nurses
- Graduate of an accredited four-year college or university with major in clinical dietetics for dietitians
- Master’s degree preferred for dietitians
- Current registration with Commission on Dietetic Registration
- Current Florida licensure as dietitian/nutritionist or eligible
- Certification as CDCES required within 1 year
- Excellent communication and multidisciplinary teamwork skills
Job Duties
- Conduct assessment of each patient’s/family’s baseline knowledge and adherence to their diabetes management regimen to determine educational needs
- Provide ongoing education in individual, group, and clinic settings
- Deliver Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) within scope of practice and department curriculum
- Create and maintain diabetes education materials for individual and group sessions
- Act as liaison between patient/family and medical providers, offering support via telephone, email, and EMR messaging for glucose management and insulin adjustments
- Collaborate with school clinic staff to provide diabetes education and assist with Diabetes Medical Management Plans
- Train and certify patients/families on use of diabetes technology devices such as insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors, and smart insulin pens
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the department and state programs
- Support diabetes camps as medical staff and engage in research study recruitment
- Provide Medical Nutrition Therapy tailored to diabetes and metabolic needs as a Registered Dietitian
