The Health Department is currently seeking a motivated and skilled Dental Assistant to join their Children's Dental Health Program. This role involves paraprofessional and technical work, supporting volunteer dentists who provide essential dental care to children in the community. Working under regular business hours from Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, this part-time position offers a competitive wage of $17.04 per hour along with access to a comprehensive benefits package. In this Dental Assistant role, you will be engaged in a broad scope of duties that encompass clinical assistance, reception, scheduling, data entry, and coordination with volunteer dentists and dental hygiene students from Wichita State University. Data accuracy is crucial, as patient and appointment information must be correctly entered into specialized county computer systems like KIPHS and DAISEY. Being bilingual in English and Spanish is an essential requirement, reflecting the department’s dedication to serving the diverse Wichita community effectively. Candidates must also hold a Dental Assistant Technical Certificate or have equivalent experience, be CPR certified, possess a valid Kansas driver’s license without restrictions, and have current automobile insurance.

Job Requirements

  • dental assistant technical certificate
  • two years of experience as a chair-side assistant or equivalent combination of experience and training
  • CPR certification
  • valid Kansas driver’s license without restrictions
  • current proof of automobile insurance
  • bilingual in English and Spanish
  • must pass pre-employment testing for proficiency in English and Spanish

Job Duties

  • schedule and confirm all volunteer dentist and patients
  • coordinate schedule with volunteer dentist
  • schedule patients for WSU hygiene students
  • answer patient questions before an appointment
  • prepare patients for dental procedures by making them comfortable and providing any instructions
  • sterilize dental instruments and equipment, and place for easy access
  • prepare the dental exam room for use by the dentist by making sure it is stocked and organized
  • assist the dentist during procedures, including passing instruments, getting supplies, and using the suction tube to keep the patient’s mouth dry
  • assist with dental x-rays
  • prevent the spread of infection and disease by maintaining a surgically clean work environment
  • travel to various locations to assist with offsite dental clinics
  • verify patient notes are correct prior to entry into computer
  • provider, patient and appointment information entered into KIPHS and DAISEY
