The role of Data Center Technician I at DataBank is integral to maintaining optimal operations within the data center environment. This position prioritizes providing exceptional customer service, managing customer communications through various channels including phone, email, face-to-face interaction, and internal case management systems. The technician is responsible for maintaining accurate chain-of-custody logs for customer packages, ensuring the cleanliness and readiness of the facility, and supports the execution of trouble tickets and remote hands requests from initiation to resolution. A key aspect of this role involves assisting in the installation of complex circuit types such as Ethernet, Sonet, and Dark Fiber, as well as monitoring critical systems inclusive of building management and security infrastructures.

As a member of the Operations Team, the DataCenter Technician I supports data center infrastructure by promptly escalating issues and helping ensure compliance with security protocols for both internal teams and customers. This role demands a practical understanding of physical security procedures, system monitoring, and hardware installation with an emphasis on maintaining facility standards and operational integrity. Technicians will also document their work, capture labor hours appropriately, and help maintain inventory accuracy for tools and equipment. Meeting predefined service levels and responding efficiently in a high-paced data center environment are expected competencies. Ultimately, this role is suited for individuals who are competent in troubleshooting technical issues, managing priority escalations, and possessing strong customer service and communication skills, all while upholding DataBank's high standards for operational excellence and security compliance.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous NOC/SOC/IOC experience or data center experience
  • Familiarity with DS1, DS3, Ethernet, and dark fiber circuits
  • Experience with data center infrastructure such as generators, UPS, DC plant, HVAC, and fire suppression systems
  • Ability to read electrical diagrams
  • 0-4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated capability
  • Customer service skills
  • Cross team collaboration
  • Ability to run cable and climb ladders
  • Capability to handle critical infrastructure emergencies
  • Network and power monitoring
  • Ability to work a rotating schedule
  • Responsibility and dependability
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Quick learner and able to apply new knowledge and skills
  • Ability to assess situations and escalate following procedures

Job Duties

  • Create and maintain effective customer relationships with customer satisfaction as the goal
  • Answer customer phone calls and emails professionally and timely
  • Assist with installs, testing, and close out of new customer orders
  • Provide computer/server hardware and software support
  • Monitor and troubleshoot technical issues and alarms with DataBank infrastructure
  • Escalate issues to on-call or engineering support teams
  • Perform physical security walkthroughs and enforce security sign-in procedures
  • Escort customers, visitors, and third parties to designated work locations
  • Capture time invested on tasks and tickets including customer installs, site expansions, outages, and remote hands
  • Maintain facility cleanliness and tour readiness
  • Follow DataBank cabling standards
  • Maintain accurate inventory of tools, equipment, and devices
  • Perform other duties as assigned
