Job Description
Sweetgreen is a pioneering national restaurant brand focused on building healthier communities by connecting people to real, wholesome food. Since its inception in 2007, Sweetgreen has transformed the fast food landscape by emphasizing fresh, flavorful meals made with intentional relationships with farmers and local communities. They are renowned for innovating the fast casual dining experience with a commitment to quality, sustainability, and inclusivity. Sweetgreen’s mission is to cultivate environments where food, people, and purpose converge, empowering their workforce and customers alike to embrace a healthier lifestyle. As Sweetgreen continues to expand its footprint across the United States, it remains dedicated to nurturing the growth and development of its employees through comprehensive training and clear career advancement pathways.
The Culinary Lead role, also known as the Kitchen Lead, represents a critical position within the Sweetgreen kitchen. This role is not a traditional people management position; rather, it centers on food quality and kitchen execution excellence. As the food quality expert, the Culinary Lead takes ownership of how food is prepared, cooked, and presented during every shift. The position requires a hands-on approach to maintaining high standards of flavor, food safety, and presentation while leading by example through skilled craft, coaching team members, and ensuring consistent culinary output.
Unlike conventional kitchens, Sweetgreen’s kitchens do not use grills or fryers, instead utilizing smart kitchen systems focusing purely on real food done right. Culinary Leads serve as the go-to person responsible for food quality, providing real-time feedback and training to peers, managing prep timing and par levels to handle high-volume service seamlessly. Collaboration with Shift Leaders and Managers is essential to uphold food safety, cleanliness, and operational excellence. The Culinary Lead role offers a unique opportunity for individuals who are passionate about food preparation and quality but prefer leadership without the full responsibilities of people management. This role is a key stepping stone within the Sweetgreen career path, offering the potential to progress to General Manager within 2-3 years for top-performing Kitchen Leads. Compensation includes competitive wages and tips depending on location and role, alongside comprehensive benefits for both part-time and full-time team members. Sweetgreen fosters an inclusive and supportive work environment, welcoming individuals with varied backgrounds and experiences to join their movement for a healthier future.
