Job Description

The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a respected 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of all residents in New York City. Job Requirements

  • Basic knife skills and ability to execute basic cooking techniques
  • Experience or training in nutrition or culinary arts
  • Commitment to and strong interest in teamwork and effective communication practices
  • Dynamic personality and excellent presentation, interpersonal, and communications skills
  • Ability to adapt recipes to reflect the food culture of communities served
  • Knowledge about regional produce
  • ServSafe certification or successful completion of the NYC Food Protection course prior to onsite start date
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural settings with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse populations
  • Experience implementing cooking demonstrations
  • Experience working as part of a team
  • Understanding of and experience with regional food systems and food security issues and the underlying causes of health inequities in NYC communities
  • Has strong customer service skills and enjoys working with people
  • Willing and able to stand for long periods and work outside in inclement weather
  • Willing and able to regularly lift and transport items weighing up to 25 pounds to and from storage and workshop locations each market day

  • ServSafe certification or successful completion of the NYC Food Protection course before starting onsite

  • Familiarity with regional food systems, food security issues, and health inequities in NYC
  • Commitment to dynamic teamwork and effective communication practices
  • Experience implementing cooking demonstrations

Job Duties

  • Prepare for and implement interactive cooking demonstrations using recipes that feature local and seasonal produce
  • Collaborate with a team including Nutrition and Bilingual Educators to deliver nutrition education workshops
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings at the NYC Health Department office for training and program updates
  • Assist with setup and teardown of cooking equipment and educational materials at market locations
  • Maintain food safety through cleaning and sanitizing cooking equipment used in demonstrations
  • Market and promote the program at farmers markets to ensure strong community participation
  • Deliver trauma-informed culinary education that reflects the food culture of the community
