Job Description
Lowcountry Street Grocery (LSG) is a pioneering social enterprise based in the Charleston area, committed to fostering a more equitable and sustainable local food system. Founded in April 2017 as a grassroots mobile farmers' market with the mission of bringing fresh produce directly to communities, LSG has grown into a multifaceted organization. It now includes two sister enterprises: Community Supported Grocery (CSG) and GroceryRx (GRx). CSG connects small farmers and producers to neighbors throughout Charleston, emphasizing food equity and convenience with a home delivery service. GRx complements this mission by providing an RDN-led produce-prescription program designed to integrate healthy food access and nutrition education into clinical settings, thereby promoting health and wellness equity. Together, these enterprises leverage innovative "Robin Hood" pricing strategies to support both small local producers and communities in need, creating a resilient, supportive food environment. This vision encapsulates LSG's dedication to sustainable systems that ensure local food proliferation and address systemic barriers to healthy food access and food insecurity.
Currently, Lowcountry Street Grocery is seeking a seasonal independent contractor to perform home deliveries for the Community Supported Grocery segment. This role involves utilizing the contractor's own vehicle to pick up, load, transport, and deliver grocery bundles to customer homes across Charleston and surrounding areas. The contractor will work 2-4 days per week on an as-needed basis during weekdays within the operating hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. This position requires adaptability in a fast-paced environment and a keen eye for detail to ensure deliveries are executed efficiently and with the highest standards. Coordination with CSG associates, coordinators, and supervisors is essential to maintain effective communication and uphold delivery quality, safety, and timeliness.
The ideal candidate possesses strong organizational skills, excellent communication abilities, and a positive, professional attitude. They must be comfortable using routing apps on smartphones to navigate delivery routes and schedules and willing to drive between 30-75 miles per delivery day locally. The independent contractor role also requires adherence to transportation regulations, maintaining a clean driving record and valid insurance that covers business use, and possessing worker's compensation insurance. Physical demands for this position include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, endure extended periods of driving, and perform tasks in outdoor, farm-like conditions.
Contractors provide their own clean, medium to large-sized vehicle with working air conditioning to ensure fresh produce and perishable items are transported under optimal conditions. Drivers should also demonstrate conflict resolution skills to handle interactions with staff, customers, and fellow contractors professionally while maintaining a family-friendly atmosphere. This role offers flexibility in scheduling and deliverers can choose days based on route availability, supporting a balance between work and personal commitments.
Compensation starts at $17 to $18 hourly, dependent on experience, plus fuel reimbursement based on South Carolina's average fuel prices. The position is classified as 1099 independent contractor status, meaning individuals are responsible for their own taxes and must complete the necessary documentation before beginning work. This exciting opportunity invites individuals passionate about local food equity, community wellness, and sustainable agriculture to join the LSG family and contribute meaningfully to transforming food access in the Charleston area.
