Within this thriving educational environment, the UNT Dining Services department stands out as the largest self-supported food service operation in North Texas. It sets the standard for campus dining with diverse offerings, including five dining halls, over 20 retail locations, an upscale restaurant, a hydroponic garden, a central scratch bakery, and comprehensive catering services. Led by professionally trained chefs and hospitality experts, the department is nationally recognized for its innovative approaches and award-winning culinary talent. Its initiatives include the Mean Greens Café, the nation’s first 100% vegan collegiate dining hall, and Kitchen West, the only university dining hall in Texas certified Free From™ the Big 8 food allergens and gluten. The launch of Eagle Landing, inspired by urban food halls and featuring seven distinct restaurant concepts all available with a single meal plan swipe, illustrates its commitment to trendsetting dining experiences. UNT Dining Services has received national acclaim, ranking No. 2 nationwide for best college food by Delish.com and winning prestigious awards such as the Loyal E. Horton Award and the Vegan Recipe Award from the National Association of College and University Food Services. Additionally, the department is actively involved in pioneering research on plant-forward diets, food waste reduction, and consumer food choices through its role in the Menus of Change University Research Collaborative.
The Cook - Residential Dining position within UNT Dining Services plays a critical role in this dynamic culinary environment. This active role involves preparing, cooking, and serving food with a commitment to high quality and adherence to safety and sanitation standards. Whether working in campus cafeterias, cafes, or catering campus events, the cook helps create a positive and enjoyable dining experience for students, faculty, and staff. The position requires knowledge of food service equipment, kitchen utensils, and health hazards associated with food preparation, combined with the ability to follow instructions and maintain accurate records. Candidates with food service experience, strong work ethics, and enthusiasm for growth within UNT Dining Services are considered ideal. This full-time, 1.0 FTE position offers a salary commensurate with experience and is TRS eligible, with a schedule featuring varying hours. The position is deemed security sensitive, requiring applicants to provide professional references as part of the hiring process. Job Duties
- Produce high-quality items each meal service including daily prepared items
- know the proper care and use of food service equipment and kitchen utensils
- understand health hazards related to food preparation and service and implement necessary precautionary measures
- follow standardized processes to minimize turnaround time and ensure a consistent supply of cleaned and sanitized dishes
- train hourly staff on proper washing, sanitizing, and handling techniques
- ensure adherence to all safety protocols
- maintain a clean and organized work environment
