Job Description

The Alaska Psychiatric Institute (API), located in Anchorage, AK, is a specialized healthcare facility committed to providing high-quality psychiatric services to its patients. As part of the State of Alaska's healthcare system, API operates with a mission to support mental health recovery through comprehensive and compassionate care. The institute's food service department plays a critical role in maintaining the wellness of its patients by delivering nutritious, safe, and well-prepared meals tailored to meet the dietary requirements and preferences of diverse individuals in a secure hospital environment.

As a Cook at the Alaska Psychiatric Institute, you will be essential to the food service operations, responsible for preparing, producing, and presenting a wide variety of foods for up to 90 patients daily. This position demands proficiency in scratch cooking and line cooking techniques, ensuring every meal adheres to strict quality and sanitation standards. You will be part of a dynamic team that manages meal production with precision, following standardized recipes and maintaining compliance with National Menu System (NMS) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards.

The role requires you to review production sheets, maintenance reports, and inventory supplies before each shift to guarantee smooth kitchen operations. In addition to food preparation, you may assist with serving patient meals and help develop new menu options alongside supervisors. As food safety is paramount in a healthcare setting, your responsibilities also include maintaining food production equipment, monitoring food storage for proper FIFO (First In, First Out) procedures, and ensuring the overall cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen environment.

This on-site position is ideal for individuals with at least two years of cooking experience, especially those skilled in preparing meals from scratch in a high-volume environment. The successful candidate will have a Municipality of Anchorage Food Handlers' Card or ServSafe certification within 30 days of employment. Given the hospital setting, the ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds and extended periods of standing and walking, is necessary.

Working at API offers the unique opportunity to contribute to a vital public health service while honing your culinary skills in a professional, regulated kitchen. The role emphasizes teamwork, adaptability, and attention to detail, as cooks often fill in different food service positions as needed. Although this position does not include supervisory responsibilities, you may assist in training food service personnel, fostering a collaborative and supportive kitchen atmosphere.

Embracing NMS core values such as safety, honesty, integrity, respect for all individuals, and environmental sustainability, API ensures an inclusive and equitable workplace culture. As an equal opportunity employer, API welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for job seekers with disabilities. This position, categorized under the NMS FFM division, offers meaningful employment in Anchorage, AK, with a focus on delivering exceptional food services in a healthcare environment.
